Documents

Assay consists of a number of different tools which integrate tightly to provide comprehensive crude oil management. These tools are accessed by using different Documents.

Documents allow you to work with several different crudes at the same time, enabling you to rapidly build and compare assays See Documents overview.
Documents are accessed using the Document Navigator, which manages your open assays and allows you to quickly access to the assay Database. See Document navigator.

Data modules

Assay contains several different modules to help manage crude oil data:

Module

Description

Reference

Database

Used for organising (including sorting, grouping and filtering) and viewing the list of crudes.

How to use the database

Profile Graph

Used for viewing property profiles for crudes, and for graphical cross hair functions.

Additionally, when using the AssayEditor, the graph becomes interactive and allows you to modify property profiles.

Property profile graph

Scatter Graph

Used for displaying any pair of crude property values, for all crudes in the database, plotted against one another as an (x, y)-scatter.

Scatter graph

Residue Graph

Used for viewing residue profiles for crudes, and for graphical cross hair functions.

Additionally, when using the AssayEditor, the graph becomes interactive and allows you to modify residue profiles.

Residue profile graph

Bar Graph

Used to view the value of cut properties on a bar chart for one or more assays. For each selected assay, the value of the property for the selected cuts is shown as a bar on the bar chart.

Viscosity graph

Viscosity Graph

Used for viewing kinematic viscosity versus temperature, for each selected cut of a crude.

Viscosity graph

Distillation Graph

Used for viewing the fitting of distillation data when this is included in the Measurement Grid and a flowsheet is associated with the streams in the grid.

Document types

The different Documents enable you to create new crude descriptions, either by manually editing them or blending together other descriptions:

Module

Description

Reference

AssayWorkup

Used for working up raw laboratory measurements for a crude oil and its products, to a fully balanced, recuttable and graphable crude description.

AssayWorkup

AssayEditor

Used for editing crude data and updating Property Profiles.

AssayEditor

AssaySynthesis

Used for synthesising a complete crude assay from limited measurement information.

AssaySynthesis

ProductSynthesis

Used for synthesising end product (such as kerosene) from limited measurement information.

ProductSynthesis

AssayUpdate

Used for reflecting changes for all properties of a known crude using only a few new measurements.

AssayUpdate

BlendAnalysis

Used for determining the most likely blend of known constituent crudes, given a limited set of measurements on the blend.

BlendAnalysis

Blend

Used for blending together any number of crudes in either weight or volume ratios.

Blend

Generic Feedstock

Used to store the properties of non-crude feedstocks (such as vegetables oils) in Assay. These feedstocks can have their properties added, but missing properties cannot be calculated. Also no cuts are possible.

Generic feedstock

Real-Time Crude

Used for creating an assay based on infra-red spectral analysis of a sample.

Real-Time Crude overview

These different document types allow easy transfer of data between one another. The Graph Module can always be shown on the right-hand side, allowing the graphical display of data contained in any Document.
