Example of viscosity profile

Measured values for kinematic viscosity can be seen on the graph. An interactive, and a non-interactive mode are available when displaying measurements on the graph:

  • In the Database, measured values and interpolated and generated viscosity profiles for selected cuts of a crude can be viewed on the graph.

  • In Documents other than the Blend, measured values and interpolated and generated viscosity profiles for selected cuts of a crude are shown on the graph. In addition, viscosity measurement values can be edited on the graph.

  • In a Blend document, no information is shown on the viscosity graph, since viscosity measurements are not available in this case.

The following types of data may be seen on the Viscosity Graph:

  • Interpolated viscosity profiles.

  • Generated viscosity profiles.

  • Viscosity measurements.

  • Measurement precisions.

The cuts shown on the graph are identified in the Graph Legend.

Interpolated Viscosity Profiles

An interpolated profile is a line of best fit between two or more active viscosity measurements. For each cut of the crude, interpolated profiles are displayed on the graph as dashed or broken lines. For easy identification, each interpolated viscosity profile shown on the graph is displayed using a distinct colour (other than grey). You can identify the cuts on the graph using the Graph Legend described below.

If only one viscosity measurement is available for a given cut, or only one viscosity measurement is active for the cut, then no interpolated profile will be displayed.

Generated Viscosity Profiles

For each cut of the crude, generated profiles are displayed on the graph using continuous or unbroken lines. For easy identification, each generated viscosity profile shown on the graph is displayed using a distinct colour (other than grey). You can identify the cuts on the graph using the Graph Legend, see below.

Generated profiles that are "out of date" are shown on the graph in grey. Operations that can cause a generated profile to become "out of date" include:

  • A measurement on a stream is activated or deactivated.

  • A measurement is added to or deleted from a stream.

  • The value of a measurement on a stream is modified.

  • The cut points of the stream to which a measurement belongs are modified.

  • The stream to which a measurement belongs is activated or deactivated.

Viscosity Measurements

Viscosity measurements are shown on the graph as bars. Active measurements are shown as solid bars, while inactive measurements are shown with dotted lines.

To toggle the activity status of a measurement on the graph, hover over the measurement and right-click with the mouse. Select the Measurement Active entry from the context menu to activate or deactivate the measurement.

You can show and hide measurements on the graph by pressing the Show/Hide Measurements button Icon toggle viscosity measurements. Shows graph with six small zig zags on the Viscosity Graph Toolbar. When the Show/Hide Measurements button is set, all viscosity measurements on the graph are shown. When cleared, all viscosity measurements on the graph are hidden. See Viscosity graph toolbar.

Note that measurement precisions overlay measurements on the Viscosity Graph. Hence, when measurement precisions are visible on the graph, active and inactive measurements are shown using v-bars instead of small circles. See Measurement Precisions below.

Measurement Precisions

Viscosity measurements with precisions are shown on the graph as small v-bars. Active measurements are shown using solid v-bars, while inactive measurements are shown using dashed v-bars. The vertical height of any v-bar is directly proportional to the width of the confidence interval of the underlying measurement. The greater the width of the confidence interval, the larger the vertical straddle of the v-bar.

To toggle the activity status of a measurement with precision on the graph, hover over the measurement and right-click with the mouse. Select the Measurement Active entry from the context menu to activate or deactivate the measurement.

You can show and hide measurements precisions on the graph by pressing the Show/Hide Measurement Precision button Icon toggle viscosity measurement precision. Shows H-bars on graph on the Viscosity Graph Toolbar. When the Show/Hide Measurement Precision button is set, all viscosity measurements on the graph are shown with precisions. When cleared, all measurement precisions on the graph are hidden, and only the underlying measurements are shown (). Thus, when underlying measurements are also hidden, no measurements are shown on the graph at all. See Viscosity graph toolbar.

Viscosity Graph Tooltips

Hovering over a viscosity measurement on the graph brings up a tooltip showing more information about the measurement, including:

  • The viscosity temperature for the measurement.

  • The cut of the crude to which the measurement belongs.

  • The value of the measurement together with a confidence interval.

Graph Legend

The Graph Legend

The Graph Legend shows the cuts of a crude. Whole crude is shown first in the Graph Legend, followed by other cuts in order of initial cut point. Cuts are allocated different colours so as to be more easily distinguishable on the Graph.

Associated with each entry in the Graph Legend is a check box. Ticking a check box adjacent to a cut shows the cut on the graph. Clearing a check box next to a cut hides the cut on the graph. Multiple selections are allowed in the legend, so that you can display or hide a range of streams simultaneously. When the Graph Legend is in focus, you can pressCtrl+Ato select all cuts in the legend, and press Space to toggle the state of selected items.
