Create a filter

In addition to a selection of preset filters, you can use the Filter Configuration dialog to define custom filters based on crude name, reference, or property constraints, so that only those crudes that fall within these specified parameters are displayed.

To launch the Filter Configuration dialog, select Configure Filters from the Filter menu in the View group of the Home ribbon tab.

To create a new filter, press the button on the filter Toolbar. To configure the filter, you need to:

• Name the filter so it is uniquely identified within Assay

• Specify the conditions comprising the filter, and

• Describe how the constituent filter conditions combine together to form the filter.

These steps are described below.

1. Choose a filter name

   

   Once you have elected to add a new filter, a dialog opens asking you for the filter name. The filter name is the name by which you refer to this particular filter. Enter a name for the filter in the dialog and press OK to continue, or Cancel to cancel the operation.

2. Add a condition to a filter

   

   A filter is built up from simple constituent conditions. Using the range of filters provided in the right hand side of the dialog, you build a new textual, flag, property constraint, source database, location or existing filter condition and add this to the filter. A corresponding natural language description of the filter condition appears in the filter conditions pane to the left hand side of the filter dialog. By repeating this process as necessary, you cumulatively build up the constituent conditions comprising the filter. See Filter types.

   Managing filter conditions

   Use the filter condition management buttons located at the bottom left of the filter conditions pane to manage the constituent conditions you construct. Press:

   • : To add a copy of the selected condition to the filter condition list

   • : To delete the selected condition from the filter condition list

   • : To move the selected condition one place up in the filter condition list

   • : To move the selected condition one place down in the filter condition list.

     Management of filter conditions in the filter conditions pane works similarly to management of columns in the Configure Columns dialog. See Configure your database views.

3. Combine filter conditions

   Collectively, the conditions shown in the filter condition pane combine together to form the new filter. The cumulative effect of this combination of conditions is determined according to the following operations:

   • : Select crudes matching against any the conditions in the filter condition list ("logical OR")

   • : Select crudes matching against all the conditions in the filter condition list ("logical AND").

     When using logical conditions with a filter it is not possible to have a mixture of OR and AND conditions. All the logical conditions in a filter must be of the same type (for example all conditions are logical OR). To create a filter using a combination of logical conditions it is necessary to create two separate filters, one containing the logical AND conditions, and the other containing the logical OR conditions. These two separate filters can then be combined into a single filter using the Existing Filter filtering condition type.
