Setting up diagnostics

Monitor various indications of server performance to keep your Server running at optimal performance levels. A way to do this is to monitor Server with available diagnostic tools. Monitor the following:

  • Disk space usage

  • Memory usage

  • RAM usage

Benefits of diagnostics

If you follow the procedure outlined in this document and set up your Server with constant diagnostic logging, you can benefit in a number of ways:

  • You can gain insight into how the service processes data.

  • You have a good chance of resolving problems and crashes, if they occur.

  • You can use the diagnostics to help tune your site. You might discover some interesting facts about your configuration, which can help you build better configurations in the future.

Basic diagnostics

Enable as many diagnostics as is practical on a production or staging server. We recommend that you enable diagnostics by default and have them run in the background.

Diagnostics can help you to troubleshoot and solve problems such as:

  • Performance problems

  • Random crashes

  • Semi-reproducible errors

The reason that you enable diagnostics by default is that many problems occur only once or are highly intermittent.

If you wait until a crash occurs before you switch on the diagnostics, the impact is greater and you do not have the information that helps you to diagnose and resolve the issue.

Running diagnostics does not affect the overall performance of your server, as it is a well performing part of the code. Some impact is noticeable only at very high data rates.
