In descriptive statistics, a box plot (also known as a box-and-whisker diagram) is a way to graphically depict the five-number summary, which consists of the smallest non-outlier observation, lower quartile, median, upper quartile and largest non-outlier observation. Box plots are able to show different types of populations, without any assumptions of the statistical distribution. The spacing between the different parts of the box can help indicate variance, skew, and identify outliers.
