Web Parts

Web Parts are a set of ASP.NET controls that allow users to customize the content, layout, and behavior of a web page, directly from their browser.

With Web Parts, users can:

  • Rearrange content on the page

  • Modify settings such as layout and appearance

  • Save personal preferences for future sessions (called personalization)

    Notes:
    - Customizations can be applied globally (for all users) or personally (for individual users), depending on user roles and permissions.
    - Users can personalize the Web Part page without developer or admin involvement.

Personalization

Personalization allows users to add/remove Web Parts, and set properties of their choice. These changes are saved and applied every time the user logs in, offering a consistent experience across browser sessions.

Personalization Scope

The Personalization Scope defines the level at which custom settings and preferences are applied in the application. It determines whether changes are specific to an individual user or shared across all users.

User Scope

  • Settings are saved for a single user only.

  • Preferences, actions, and customizations are unique to that user and do not affect others.

  • Supports a mix of personalized and shared web parts.

Example: A user customizes their dashboard by adding or removing web parts. These changes apply only to that user’s dashboard.

Shared Scope

  • Settings are applied globally and affect all users.

  • Provides a consistent, standardized experience across the application.

  • By default, there are no web parts in Shared Scope.

Example: An administrator updates the company homepage or adds a new web part for everyone. This change is visible to all users immediately.

Web Part Zone

Web Part Zone Control

A Web Part Zone is a placeholder or area on a web page where you can add different Web Parts.

Using the Webparts Settings, you can add a Web Part to the zone you choose (such as the Header, Left, or Right zone), where it will appear. The Web Part then “fits” or sits inside that zone on the page.

Editor Zone Control

The Editor Zone control allows users to modify and personalize web pages. Personalization can include:

  • Changing layout and appearance of Web Parts

  • Configuring settings such as which widgets (Work Item List Control, Calendar, Queue Control, etc.) appear
