Difference between Value for the Rights and Follower Specific Value for Rights

Difference between Value for the Rights and Follower Specific Value for Rights

Every Security Right has two properties that need to be set. These are Value and Follower Value.

  • Value - This is the value that you want to set for the Security Right. This value is applicable for the right to which you set it for, and is applied for the current level.

  • Follower Value - This is the value that you want the right to hold for the follower. If there is no security defined at a particular entity level then that entity will inherit Follower Value from its immediate dictator. First a check is be done to view if the current level has a security definition. If there is no security defined at this level, then the security defined for the immediate dictator will be considered. See Dictator and Follower for more information.

Even if the child items are granted permission, it will not be accessible unless its parent has the required permission. For example, if a user does not have permission for a folder then user will not have access to the items under that.

Example:

Let us assume that the 'HR Process', 'Leave Process' and 'Holiday Process' are items inside Workflow Lists. 'Leave Process' and 'Holiday Process' are child items of 'HR Process'.

Assume that there is an explicit ListItem level security is applied for 'HR Process' and 'Holiday Process' and there is no explicit ListItem level security applied for 'Leave Process'.

The 'HR Process' and 'Holiday Process' will use the rights specified to apply security at their levels. Since no security is set for 'Leave Process', it will inherit the security defined for its parent item. Here, 'Leave Process' inherits the security settings from 'HR Process'. Hence, the follower value rights that are defined at 'HR Process' will be applied to 'Leave Process'.

The 'Leave Process' is called the follower of the 'HR Process' (in security context) and 'Holiday Process' is called a child of the 'HR Process', not its follower.
