Calculate gas quality (GQ)

  • Last UpdatedNov 18, 2025
  • 1 minute read

When performing an API 14.4 mass to volume calculation for a meter, it is assumed that you are using a liquid GQ analysis. A liquid GQ will not be calculated. For the API 14.4 calculation, the Cx plus type wlll be spread, but the heating value, specific gravity and compressibility will not be calculated.

To calculate the Gas Quality (GQ)

  1. On the Calculator, select the GQ Data tab.

  2. Enter values into the fields for the parameters: In and Both.

  3. At a minimum, fill out the following fields on the GQ Config tab:

    • Cx plus type

    • Spread Weights to 0

    • Density Reference Pressure

    • Density Reference Temperature

    • Dry Threshold

    • Viscosity Datasource

    • At least one of the analysis components. For example, C1.

Note: A liquid GQ analysis must have the heating value specified for an energy calculation.

  4. Optional: Select Details to view more information about the calculation.

Selecting Details will bring up the Calculation Debugging dialog. Defining the debug level will allow you to select how much information you would like to see presented in the log. Using the Calculation Debugging tool provides the Administrator with information about the unit conversion methods employed as well as the intermediate values used in the calculation.

  5. Select Calculate.

The calculated values appears in the appropriate Out and Both fields of the GQ Data tab.
