Split Pipes on Work Area Boundaries
- Last UpdatedApr 12, 2024

Pipes can be split where they pass through a work area boundary, this enables pipes to be assigned to work packs in their respective work areas.
A candidate split point can be placed at the position where a pipe tube crosses the boundary, unless a nearby component arrive or leave point is available. Settings control how far from the boundary a component point can be used, and whether a point outside the boundary can be used.
Where a component crosses the boundary, the nearest arrive or leave point is used, subject to the setting where a point outside the boundary can be used.
Settings also control if a field weld is inserted, and how that weld is selected from the pipe specification, or if a branch head/tail connection is inserted without a weld.
For other scenarios, for example, where an assembly is required to be inserted, use the Split Pipe window in the piping module. Refer to Pipe Splitting for further information.
Note:
The functionality is available only for rectangular box shaped work areas, the work
area definition must be a dynamic collection based on a VOLM element containing a
BOX element.
The example displays a dynamic collection based on a VOLM element containing a BOX element.

Select a CWAREA element in the Model Explorer and on the Work Packs tab, in the Tools group, click Split to display the Split by Work Area window. A progress bar displays whilst candidate split points are calculated.

Add CE |
Adds the currently selected CWAREA element in the Model Explorer and recalculates the candidate split points. |
Tag
Select the All radio button to tag all candidate split points.
Select the Selected radio button to tag all candidate split points for selected rows.
Select the Unselected radio button to tag all candidate split points for rows that are not selected.
Select a row in the candidate split points grid and right-click to display a drop-down menu.

Zoom to Selected Split Candidates
Adjusts the 3D view to focus on the selected candidate split points.
Navigate To
Makes the first selected row item the current element.
Recalculate Split Candidates
Redisplays the candidate split points using the current settings.
Apply
Select one or more rows in the grid and click Apply to split the pipes at the selected candidate split points. The results display as a tooltip in the grid status column.

Settings
Displays the available pipe split settings

If the settings are inactive, the project administrator has set them to read only.
Allow split outside work area boundary
Select the check box to allow candidate split points outside of the work area boundary.
Max distance from boundary to split at component
Specifies the maximum allowed distance for the position of candidate split points outside of the work area boundary.
Split with
Select the Field Weld radio button to split the work area and insert a field weld.
Select the Head/Tail only radio button to split the work area at the head or tail of the pipe tube.
Question
Specifies the pipe specification selector for a field weld.
Allowable Answers
Specifies the valid pipe specification welds. When choosing a weld, each weld is processed, in the order listed, until a valid weld is found or the application fails. The application also uses SHOP FALS.
Edit and replace
Edit the currently selected pipe specification weld and press Enter to replace the selection.
|
|
Add pipe specification weld |
Adds a new pipe specification weld to the grid, input the pipe specification weld in the Edit and replace field. |
|
|
Remove pipe specification weld |
Removes the currently selected pipe specification weld from the grid. |
|
|
Move selected row up |
Moves the currently selected pipe specification weld up the order in the grid. |
|
|
Move selected row down |
Moves the currently selected pipe specification weld down the order in the grid. |
Save
Saves the pipe split settings.
Back
Displays the candidate split points grid.
Note for Administrators:
The Split by Work Area window requires the work pack configuration to be previously setup. A check is performed
for the presence of an application data world and the application attempts to add
settings below it. The first time the Split by Work Area window is displayed, write access must be available for the application data world.
Thereafter, the Split by Work Area window can be used without write access to the settings, provided they can be read.
