Reference Datum

Often, different design systems use different orientation and positioning defaults. For example, a building might have its origin at one corner, and a principal axis parallel to a main wall. This might not be correct when the building is considered in the context of the whole project model.

This information is not transferred through the IFC file and must be communicated personally between the producer of the IFC file and its receiver.

This aspect is most relevant when importing models from a variety of sources to be aggregated into the single AVEVA E3D Design model with a uniform positioning and orientation system. Each IFC file might have a local origin and orientation which must be coordinated with the whole model.

Select the Use Reference Datum check box to relocate and re-orientate the model in AVEVA E3D Design in preparation for export to the target design system. The Reference Datum drop-down list becomes available.

In the Application Data World, a set of Reference Datum points (ZONEs) can be generated which are used to provide coordinate systems for transforming the exported model. Normally they are not editable (locked by default), but can be changed.

The actual Reference Datum names have a "secret" suffix, this is for security so that the risk of name clashes is reduced.

Use the Reference Datum drop-down list to select an existing reference datum or to create a new one.
