Reference Data

  • Last UpdatedAug 21, 2025
  • 3 minute read

Use the Reference Data part of the Structural Specification window to define catalog and template references for specification components. The content of this section of the window is dependent on the current specification purpose to allow references of different types of elements to be set.

Note:
Setting both catalog and template references for the same specification component is not supported.

The example displays the reference data for a joint specification:

Category

Input the name of an Structural Section (STSE), Structural Category (STCA) or Template (TPWL) element into the field to load elements of the appropriate type into the Catalog and Template drop-down lists. Alternatively, use CE or Search to find the required category. Refer to Search for further information.

Generate Spec Components

Adds multiple components to the Spec Block Rows grid from the current category. The functionality is slightly different depending on the type of specification:

Profile Specifications: A new specification block is created for each STCA element under the selected category. If the current category is an STCA element, a single specification block is created. A new specification component is created for each SPRF element found in the category. The Generic Type, Name and Catalog Reference columns for the components are generated from the STSE data. The specification block description is generated from the STCA description.

A Confirm window displays indicating the number of blocks and components to be generated.

Joint and Fitting Specifications: A new specification component is created for each catalog or template element (JOIN/TMPL for joint specification; SFIT/TMPL for fitting specification) under the selected category. The components are added to the current specification block. If adding catalog elements, the function attempts to populate the Owner Type and Attached Type columns by referencing the catalog item datasets.

A Confirm window displays indicating the number of components to be generated.

Note: The generate spec components functionality is not available for automatic joint specifications.

Catalog/Template

The Template and Category drop-down lists are populated when a valid Category is selected.

Valid catalog and template types are:

  • Profile Specifications - SPRF

  • Profile/Panel Fitting Specifications - SFIT; TMPL

  • Joint/Merged Joint Specifications - JOIN; TMPL

Each drop-down list also includes options to:

  • Use the current element as a reference if it is of appropriate type. For example to access a catalog joint that is not available in one of the specification lists.

  • Unset the reference, to clear it. For example, if swapping a row from template to catalog.

View

Displays an image of the joint or fitting details. Design parameters are tagged with a pencil symbol.

Note:
Images must be available in a resources file. Images are not available for profile specifications.

Set Catalog Reference in Selected Rows

Select one or more rows in the Spec Block Rows grid, select a Catalog or Template reference and click the Set Catalog Reference in Selected Rows to set that reference in the appropriate cell of each selected row.
