Naming a Gauge Item (Legacy 3DS MAX)

  • Last UpdatedJul 04, 2023
  • 1 minute read

The Gauge is an analog radial indicator, like a manometer. It includes a body with a quadrant and a needle to indicate the measured variable value.

  • In this type of gauge, the quadrant face of the gauge must be multi-material with a dummy texture called gauge_default.tga.

  • The engine generates the dummy texture at runtime.

  • The dummy texture displays the text and gauge ticks.

Building the item

  • Create the mesh of the gauge and needle.

  • For the needle and the gauge, apply a shader and then check bObjectSpace.

  • Move the needle pivot to the correct rotation point.

  • Reset the transformations of the meshes with the Reset Objects State tool. Do not use the Center pivot option.

  • Set the rotation pivot of the needle on the x-axis.

  • Use the Select and Link tool to create relationships. The dummy is the child of the gauge and the needle is the child of the dummy.

Comments

  • The needle must be oriented to the minimum value of the scale.

  • The mesh that flashes when the item is selected is the body mesh: gauge_xxx.
