In family history, genealogy is the study of families and the tracing of their lineages and history. In AVEVA Production Management, we can analyze the relationship information between lots, so that we can determine the lot lineage and history.
As material moves through the supply chain, it travels many paths: it can be merged, split, and merged again with other materials, before it is shipped to the customer. Throughout this process, AVEVA Production Management automatically captures the information between material movements. With this information, AVEVA Production Management can determine the path of a particular lot or lots.
Genealogy enables you to track lot history in two directions: upstream (forward) and downstream (backward).
How does AVEVA Production Management determine Genealogy data?
AVEVA Production Management determines Genealogy data using the following Inventory elements:
-
Equipment - Equipment items, such as work centers and work units, represent locations where Inventory information is required, and they represent process types. They also define how material lots behave when they enter or leave the equipment.
-
Materials - Represents the raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods that the plant uses, produces, and stores.
-
Material movements - Represents the movement of materials to, between, and from pieces of equipment.
-
Lots - AVEVA Production Management automatically creates records when creating lots, as determined by material movements for that equipment.

Example: Finding related lots that meet a criteria
This is a high-level process diagram of a Coal supply chain. It shows how material flows from the mines and is shipped to customers. There are three primary sites: Mine A, Mine B, both include their Coal Handling Preparation Plants (CHPPs) and the Port.

At a more detailed level, feed is delivered to the ROM by trucks and is fed into ROM Bins at each CHPP. The CHPP converts feed into Product and places it onto stockpiles. Product is moved from the stockpiles into a Train Loadout Bin and then loaded onto trains. The Trains are unloaded onto a stockpile, which is then loaded onto a vessel. A customer has requested to know the Ramp/Strip/Block details of the product that was loaded onto vessel VES456-20100405. The user would launch the Genealogy wizard, and specify a starting filter of Vessel = VES456-20100405, to find related lots that meet a final filter of Location is Mine A or Mine B.
