Add and configure a PI group

A PiGroup item is an item that you add to a PI data source in Project Explorer, and you are required to add at least one group to a data source. A group and the items that it stores represent a collection of variables or PI points on a PI server.

A group monitors multiple variables as a collection, where the variables share common data acquisition characteristics. The properties of a group manage the polling of the variables, such as the polling rate and the use of a status variable. You can add multiple groups to a data source.

Prerequisite

Add the data source before adding a group.

To add a PI group

  1. In the Project Explorer, right-click the data source, and then click Add Group. A PIGroup item appears.

Studio project hierarchy view highlighting the PI group item in PI data source structure.

  2. Rename the item with a meaningful name.

  3. Configure the properties. For guidance in configuring the properties, refer to PI group properties.
