Start and stop a project manually

  • Last UpdatedMar 21, 2025

You can manually start or stop the current project, or in part, by item or by branch in the Project Explorer. This action directly controls the behavior of the project running on the server computer; the server does the work of the running items.

Start from the Project menu

If you use the menu or shortcut keys to command a project start, every stopped item in the project with the StartupMode property is set to Auto starts. Whenever you use the menu or shortcut keys to command a project stop, every running item in the project stops. In either case, the value of the StartupMode property remains unchanged.

Start a project in Studio manually

  • On the Project menu, click Start.

Every stopped item in the project where the StartupMode property is set to Auto starts.

Stop a project in Studio manually

  • On the Project menu, click Stop.

Every item in the project stops.

Start from the right-click menu

When you use the Project Explorer menu to command a start, the appropriate items in the project, dependent on the selected location in the hierarchy, start regardless of their respective StartupMode property setting. The StartupMode property for those items updates to Auto, and the setting saves to the project database on the server and propagates to connected clients. When you use the Project Explorer menu to command a stop, the appropriate running items stop. The StartupMode property for those items updates to Manual, and the setting saves to the project database on the server and propagates to connected clients.

Start an item in Studio manually

  1. Right-click the item in the Project Explorer hierarchy.

  2. Click Start.

Selected items start regardless of their respective StartupMode property setting, and the StartupMode property for those items updates to Auto.

Stop an item in Studio manually

  1. Right-click the item in the Project Explorer hierarchy.

  2. Click Stop.

Selected running items stop, and the StartupMode property for those items updates to Manual.

    Notes:

    • When you manually change the StartupMode property setting for a parent item, the StartupMode property setting for any child items of the parent are not recursively changed. Only a manual start of a parent item in the Studio Project Explorer can change the StartupMode property setting for any child items of the parent.

    • The child items beneath an OLE-DB Data Source item in the Project Explorer hierarchy do not start or stop recursively, like the child items of a standard folder item, if the OLE-DB Data Source item is set to Manual. The service start does not check the StartupMode property of the children items and does not start them, even if the StartupMode property on the children items is set to Auto.
