AVEVA™ Production Management

Developing a time classification system

The time usage model is a core component of the AVEVA™ Production Management equipment matrix. It enables you to build a model to describe how time is used in the production process.

In this model, the classifications are: Planned maintenance, Breakdown stoppages, and Operational stoppages.

A diagram to show a time usage model with these classifications, Breakdown, Planned maintenance, and Planned Operational stoppages and showing the actual production time from a starting point to the end for each classification.

The model illustration helps to examine the following questions:

  • How much time is available for production?

  • How much time did production stop due to planned maintenance?

  • How much time did production stop due to unplanned maintenance due to equipment?

  • How much time did production stop due to unplanned maintenance due to people?

The objective is to have the maximum amount of production up time and limit the amount of downtime. However, some downtime is unavoidable and is a natural part of facility maintenance. It helps to categorize the different reasons that downtime occurs so that you can minimize downtime and achieve the highest amount of possible production time.

We recommend that you create a model of time usage to define the appropriate classifications for your organization. The following graphic provides an example of how you might categorize downtime events.
