About routine material movements

A material movement item contains the configured details for an automatic movement of material from one location in the plant to another. We call this type of movement a routine movement.
A routine material movement is a predefined item in Studio that is configured to create an automatic movement.

A routine material movement contains information about the material and quantity to move, such as:
-
From where the material moves (source location)
-
Type of material to move.
-
Quantity of material to move.
-
To where the material moves (destination location)
AVEVA™ Production Management automatically creates an record when a specified material movement occurs in the plant. The material movement item defines the expression that determines when the corresponding material movement occurs. AVEVA™ Production Management creates an Inventory record when the result of the expression changes from False to True. You can view the resulting material movement records in Production Analyst.
Ad-hoc material movements
Alternatively, there is another type of material movement that is ad-hoc. This allows for situations when the operator is required to record a one-off movement in the system that wasn't planned. See Adhoc material movement.
An adhoc material movement is a one-off material movement that is created manually by the operator, instead of being created automatically by AVEVA™ Production Management.
Dynamic material movements
A dynamic material movement item is a configurable item that is similar to a material movement. However, where a material movement has a static source and destination, with a dynamic material movement, these values are configurable by expression.

Direction types
A material movement item can be defined as moving in one of three directions:
-
Input - Material enters the process; there is no source work equipment.
-
Output - Material leaves the process; there is no destination work center.
-
Internal - Material moves from a source work equipment to a destination work center.
Movements and Sample Identifier
Movements have a SampleIdentifier field that AVEVA™ Production Management matches with a unique RecordIdentifier field on a Quality record when configured. When material is moved from a source to a destination, the SampleIdentifier can be inherited by the destination.
For more information, see About Sample Identifier.
Moving material in and out of lot groups
When you configure automatic material movements where one movement inputs material into a lot group and an output movement extracts the material from the same lot group, we recommend that the output movement occurs after the input movement. If these movements occur at the same time, the output movement could attempt to extract non-existent material from the lot group because AVEVA™ Production Management has not yet processed the material input.
This could result in AVEVA™ Production Management not recording any material flows against the output movement, even though there is a movement event record. If an output movement attempts to extract non-existent material from a lot group, no error message appears.
