Create nested parts in nested continuation area

  • Last UpdatedSep 04, 2025
  • 3 minute read

In a datasheet template, a parent part and its associated parts can be nested. This topic shows how to create multiple nested parts in a nested continuation area.

When you create a new part by selecting a class in the Select class dialog, any associated parts are automatically added to the datasheet.

For more information about continuation areas, refer to Continuation Area.

For more information about nested parts, refer to Part of Parts.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure the following actions have been completed:

  • The parts available in the Select class dialog depend on the database view set configuration. Each class must have a related database view set up correctly.

  • The nested parts that are to be included in the datasheet must be mapped to cells in the continuation area.

Create a new part including its associated nested parts

  1. Open a datasheet instance configured with a nested continuation area.

  2. Right-click a parent part cell in the datasheet and select Select/Create parts.

    The Select class dialog opens.

If a part has an association to one class using more than one attribute, the associated class is included in the Select class list once for every attribute.

To see the part hierarchy and associated attributes, hold the mouse pointer over a class name.

  3. Select a class in the Select class dialog, and then select Select.

    The New tag dialog opens.

  4. In the New tag dialog, enter the tag information you want to use for the part, and then select Create.

A new New tag dialog for the opens if there are related parts in the part hierarchy that need tagging.

  5. Enter tag name information for each related part in the part hierarchy, and then select Create.

A log of the process and created items is available in the Messages window, under System.

When using this method, if you create parts that have not been mapped to the continuation area, the parts are added to the current grid and the attribute associations are created, but they are not displayed in the datasheet instance.

Example

In this example, the parent IGCC has the part Rotor, and Rotor has an association with six other classes, and all classes have an association with the Stage part. In the datasheet, the parts hierarchy is displayed from left to right.

If two or more attribute associations that belong to the same class are added to the datasheet, the class is displayed only once, with the related attributes displayed under it.

Create a new datasheet page for a new parent part with copied parts mapping

  1. Right-click an empty cell in the parent part column and select Select/Create.

    The New tag dialog opens.

  2. In the New tag dialog, enter the tag information you want to use for the new parent part, and then select Create.

If there are dependent classes associated with the parent, for example Operating Conditions and Design Conditions, a new New tag dialog automatically open for each class.

  3. In the New tag dialogs, select Create.

A new datasheet page is created with a new parent part that can be populated with nested parts in the same way as the original parent part.
