Tapered Profiles

  • Last UpdatedNov 09, 2023

Tapered profiles can be setup with user provided tables which allows for specific taper sizes. Refer to User Provided Tables for further information. It is also possible to map design parameters to the equivalent Staad Pro attributes.

In Staad Pro, the tapered profiles are defined as:

Parameter

Description

f1

Depth of section at start node. Must be greater than f3.

f2

Thickness of web.

f3

Depth of section at end node.

f4

Width of top flange.

f5

Thickness of top flange.

f6

Width of bottom flange. Defaults to f4 if left out.

f7

Thickness of bottom flange. Defaults to f5 if left out.

The mapping between the profile and the equivalent AVEVA E3D Design specification reference is defined in the mapping file. For example:

MEMBER PROPERTY

* Tapered

TAPERED , /DP-DTWIB-SREC, d1 d2 d3 d4 d5,<d1> <d4> <d2> <d3> <d5>,0,-90,0

The profile mapping consists of columns delimited by ',' .The description of the columns are:

  • TAPERED is the keyword

  • The equivalent AVEVA E3D Design specification reference

  • AVEVA E3D Design parameters

  • The equivalent Staad Pro attributes

  • Beta angle change for non-vertical sections

  • Beta angle change for vertical sections

  • Mirror flag

The mapping between the equivalent parameters is:

  • In both cases parameter 1 defines the start depth.

  • End depth is defined by DESP 2 but is the third parameter in Staad Pro, hence <d2> is the third parameter in the Staad Pro attributes.

  • Flange width is defined by DESP 3 but is the fourth parameter in Staad Pro, hence <d3> is the fourth parameter in the Staad Pro attributes.

  • Web thickness is defined by DESP 4 but is the second parameter in Staad Pro, hence <d4> is the second parameter in the STAAD Staad Pro attributes.

  • In both cases parameter 5 defines the flange thickness.

Export

On export, the output finds GENSECs with specification reference /DP-DTWIB-SREC and outputs the start depth (DESP 1), web thickness (DESP 4), end depth (DESP 2), flange width (DESP 3), flange thickness (DESP 5). For example:

MEMBER PROPERTY

3 7 TAPERED 1.000 0.030 0.750 0.500 0.050

Import

On import, the equivalent line creates ISECTs with a specification reference of /DP-DTWIB-SREC and sets the DESPs based on the equivalent mapping.

  • D1 - DESP1

  • D2 - DESP4

  • D3 - DESP2

  • D4 - DESP3

  • D5 - DESP5

This allows the compare functionality to check for any changes to the equivalent GENSECs in either the specification reference or the design parameters.

Caveats

  • The tapered profile in Staad Pro tapers centrally, by default, the AVEVA E3D Design profile tapers with a flat top.

  • Be sure to make a rule to set the JUSL of a tapered profile to CTOP. If there is no rule, the creation functionality sets the JUSL to NA, which can lead to unexpected results.
