Set up and Manage DWG or DXF Export Settings

  • Last UpdatedOct 30, 2025

You can define multiple export configuration sets to store settings for the export of drawings to a DWG or DXF file. You can add, modify, copy or delete export configuration sets.

On the Project tab, select Export Settings, select Export to DXF/DWG from the Select Export Type drop-down list to display the DXF/DWG Export Settings window.

Note:
By default, backing sheets are exported to a separate layer. The AutoCAD application assigns the backing sheet to the layer named backlayer.

The list of configuration sets displays the available export configuration sets. Select a configuration set to display the settings. Non-editable configuration sets are indicated with a Lock icon.

Many of the options available when exporting to a DWG or DXF file are available when exporting to a DGN file (refer to Set up and Manage DGN Export Settings for further information), except the following options.

Export to Paper Space

Select the check box to export the entire drawing to a paper space block. Additionally, all views containing design elements are exported to a model space block.

The following options are only available when you select Show Advanced settings.

Header File

Select the check box to associate a header file with the exported output.

Click Select Header file and browse to the required header file.

Backing sheets

Select the check box to form backing sheets into blocks.

Fills

Select the check box to form fills into blocks.

Overlays

Select the check box to form overlays into blocks.

Nested Blocks

Select the check box to create nested blocks.

Attributes

Select the check box to create attributes in exported blocks for text, labels and backing sheets. The ETEXT attribute value of TEXP or TXTM elements is exported as the attribute name. The text attribute value of the TEXP or TXTM is exported as the attribute value, for example the BTEXT attribute of a TEXP.

Use Blocking Rules

Select the check box to use blocking rules for the export. Edit blocking rules becomes active.

Edit blocking rules

Click to define the blocking rules for the export. Refer to Edit Blocking Rules for further information.

Note:
If Model Visual Layers are in use, they are exported and the model geometry that references them is exported with Colors and Lines 'ByLayer'. However, these are overridden by any export layer rules defined below. Refer to Create and Modify Visual Layers for further information.

Use layer rules

Select the check box to use layer rules for the export. Edit layer rules becomes active.

Note:
These override Model Visual Layers for any elements they apply to.

Colors ‘ByLayer’ in export

Select the check box to export colors 'ByLayer' when a given (design) element matches a layer rule.

Note:
This setting does not affect Model Visual Layers which are always 'ByLayer'.

Edit layer definitions

Click to modify layers for the export. Refer to Edit Layer Definitions for further information.

Lines ‘ByLayer’ in export

Select the check box to export line styles and line weights 'ByLayer' when a given (design) element matches a layer rule.

Note:
This setting does not affect Model Visual Layers which are always 'ByLayer'.

Edit layer rules

Click to define the layer rules for the export. Refer to Edit Layer Rules for further information.

Use layering by site

Select the check box to create a unique layer for each SITE and place all design information from that site onto the layer.

Use layering by zone

Select the check box to create a unique layer for each ZONE and place all design information from that zone onto the layer.

Use view prefixing

Select the check box to add a unique numeric view prefix value to the beginning of each AutoCAD Layer name created from Draw views.

The functionality is only available if the Use layering by site or Use layering by zone check box is selected.
