Cylinder and Cone Surfaces

  • Last UpdatedDec 05, 2025

Creates parametric cylinder or cone surfaces for modeling tasks. These surfaces can be used by downstream modeling functions, for example, to create panels.

A cylinder surface is often used to model components like a bow thruster, as shown in the following image:

Cylinder is the default surface type for this tool. To create a cone instead, use the following procedure, but press the down arrow and select Cone after the first step. Alternatively, press C to switch between cylinder and cone.

Create a cylinder surface

  1. On the Common Reference tab, in the Create group, select Surface then select Cylinder/Cone from the dropdown menu.

  2. Select in the 3D View to set the center point.

Alternatively, enter the desired center point coordinates into the text fields:

  3. Enter the radius by selecting in the 3D View, or by entering the size in the text field.

To use diameter instead of radius, press the down arrow and select Diameter, or press D.

  4. Confirm the dimensions by selecting in the 3D View, or by pressing Enter.

The surface is created as a parametric surface.

  5. Once a Cylinder or Cone Surface is created, you can use the Properties window to view or modify the surface properties.

For more information on how to use the Properties window, see Properties.

Alternatively, double-click the surface to make interactive adjustments in the 3D View using grips.
