Create Symbol Template

  • Last UpdatedOct 08, 2024
  • 2 minute read

Creates a Symbol Template (SYTM) element that defines the appearance of the 2D symbols which users can select and add to their drawings (as symbol instances).

Note:
It is easier to position and align the individual parts of each SYTM, for example the primitives, text, and/or instances of other symbols if you display a working grid with a fairly small spacing (10 mm) and set the snap function on.

Click Symbol Template and then Create to display the Create Symbol Template window.

The Create Symbol Template window has similar functionality to the Hierarchy Browser window. Refer to Hierarchy Browser for further information.

Browse the hierarchy to select the Symbol Library element that the new element is to be created under.

Input a name in the Name field, or leave it blank if the element is to be assigned a name automatically.

To open a drop-down list consisting of elements that can be created at the current level, click New above the left-hand part of the window.

The icon above the right-hand part is used to specify whether symbol templates display as thumbnails, a simple list, or a list with details.

If the symbol templates are viewed as thumbnails, the Background Colour option becomes available. Click Background Colour to modify the background colour of all symbols in the currently selected symbol library using the Color palette. The background colour can be modified to prevent the symbol background being non-distinguishable from the symbol content.

Note:
The background change is not permanent. When the Create Symbol Template window is closed and reopened, the background colour reverts to the default colour specified in the project options.

Click Create to create the new element. A new sheet is then created and opened. You can now modify the new element, for example, create the symbol elements, by using the standard drawing and annotation facilities.

Functionality is available to create symbol templates with regular text or dynamic text. Regular text elements cannot be individually modified when the symbol is placed on the drawing canvas, dynamic text elements can be individually modified when the symbol is placed on the drawing canvas. Refer to Set Regular or Dynamic Symbol Template Text for further information.

Functionality is available to create symbol templates that contain extensible symbols. Refer to Create Symbol Template with Extensible Symbols for further information.

Click Cancel to discard any changes and close the Create Symbol Template window.
