Selector Auto Naming

  • Last UpdatedAug 21, 2025
  • 2 minute read

Specification Selector (SELE) elements can be automatically named when the specification is written to the database. Use the Selectors tab to configure auto naming for SELE elements.

Note:
The selector name must not exceed 50 characters. A selector name with more than 50 characters causes the selector to fail the validation check.

Note:
Selectors cannot be automatically named for automatic joint specifications.

Enable Auto-Naming for Selectors

Select the check box to enable the auto naming functionality for selectors.

Naming Convention

A name for each selector is generated based on their position in the selector hierarchy.

Questions and Answers

The selector name is based on the Question and Tanswer attributes, and the Question and Tanswer attributes of owning selectors in the hierarchy, separated by hyphens.

Answers

The selector name is based on the Tanswer attribute, and the Tanswer attribute of owning selectors in the hierarchy, separated by hyphens.

Prefix

A prefix can be specified which is added to the start of each selector name.

No Prefix

A prefix is not added to the start of each selector name.

Spec Name

Adds the specification name to the start of each selector name. The specification name is denoted with a * until the specification is written, to allow for modification of the name.

Custom Prefix

Adds a specified custom text prefix to the start of each selector name.

Suffix

A suffix can be specified which is appended to each selector name.

No Suffix

A suffix is not appended to each selector name.

Description

The description attribute of each selector, if available, is appended to the selector name. If the description attribute is unset, no text is appended.

Custom Suffix

Specify a custom text suffix to append to each selector name.

Example Name

Displays an example name for the SELE using the current settings.

For example, a selector is named:

Test-PFI-PFT-SAME-EqualBeams

The name is derived using various identifiers:

Test- - Custom Prefix defined for the selector.

PFI-PFT-SAME - The branch of the selector hierarchy is constructed with three selectors: a selector with Tanswer PFI, which owns a selector with Tanswer PFT, which owns this selector, Tanswer SAME.

EqualBeams - The description of the selector: Equal Beams has been appended to the end of the name, with the space removed.

Click OK to save the auto name settings and close the Configure Auto Naming window. Settings are serialized for the current user.
