Symbolic Representation

Symbolic representation is often used in Marine drawings. This way of drawing the model has several characteristics:

  • The view is generated from a defined location, not just a view direction. In a simple case, the view location can be a plane at a specific coordinate position, for example, X=120000. This plane is referred to as the location plane.

  • Model elements in a cross section view will be represented by a contour that is positioned at the intersection between the model and the location plane.

  • It is often a simplified way to draw. For example, a stiffener can be represented as a trace line with a symbol indicating the end cut/connection type.

  • The drawing provides information on how the model elements relate to each other and the defined location. For example:

    • Model elements can be displayed that are positioned on ‘this side’ or the ‘other side’ of the defined location.

    • Model elements can be displayed that are abutting or penetrating other elements.

The model element relationships are displayed using different line styles and colours.

The property that expresses the additional information about the model geometry, for example, this side, other side or abutting cross section is called relative location. This makes it possible to represent model elements with different colours and line types depending on the display being a planar projection or a cross section. Model elements can also be represented with different line types and colours depending on whether they are positioned on this side or the other side of the location plane.

The example displays a view of the bulkhead at FR44 looking FOR.

Please note that the example graphics are a visual representation of the symbolic concept, the actual results in the application are displayed with less detail.
