Step 2: Understand API 14.3

An accumulator configured as an orifice meter sourced from a differential pressure analog always uses API 14.3.4 Third Edition, November 1992 (US Customary) as its calculation method.

  1. Calculate the upstream flowing fluid pressure from the downstream static pressure if the orifice meter is configured with a downstream pressure tap (Pfu).

  2. Determine flowing density (Yf).

If the density is configured to come from the density analog, the analog reading will be used. Otherwise, the flowing density of ethylene will be looked up using API 11.3.2.1—Table 6.6.

  3. Determine dynamic viscosity (μ').

If the product type’s kinematic viscosity is not configured, the system uses the pressure and temperature analog readings to look up the dynamic viscosity using API 11.3.2.1—Table 6.2.

  4. Determine Isentropic Exponent (κ).

If the product type already has an isentropic exponent configured (the value is non-zero), then this is the value that will be used. Otherwise, using the pressure and temperature analog readings, the isentropic exponent of ethylene will be looked up using API 11.3.2.1—Table 6.3.

  5. Calculate orifice plate bore diameter from reference diameter (d).

  6. Calculate the diameter ratio (β).

  7. Calculate the velocity of approach factor (Ev).

  8. Calculate the dimensionless upstream tap position (L1).

  9. Calculate the dimensionless downstream tap position (L2).

  10. Calculate the dimensionless downstream dam height (M2).

  11. Calculate upstream tap correction factor (Tu).

  12. Calculate downstream tap correction factor (Td).

  13. Calculate small pipe correction factor (Ts).

  14. Calculate the coefficients of discharge constants (Cd0, Cd1, Cd2, Cd3, Cd4).

  15. Calculate the compressible fluid expansion factor (Y).

  16. Calculate the iteration flow factor (Fi).

  17. Calculate the coefficient of discharge (Cd).

  18. Calculate mass flow factor (Fmass).

  19. Calculate the mass flow rate (Qm).

  20. Calculate the volume flow rate at flowing conditions (Qv).

  21. Calculate the volume flow rate at base conditions (Qb).
