Pump Power Management

  • Last UpdatedJul 04, 2024
  • 5 minute read

Pump Power Management consists of:

  • Power usage information configured as part of Pump Statistics. This includes power consumption at pumps and pump stations, on-peak and off-peak electricity rate periods, and periodic power authorizations.

  • Power usage rules.

Pump Power Management is implemented as an API that provides access to the power usage information and rules. The API assists the Controller in managing power consumption in two ways:

  1. Warning the Controller if a pump start command will violate power usage rules.

  2. Issuing an alarm if state conditions have changed such that power usage rules are violated.

Power Usage Values

Maximum Power Consumption โ€“ This is configured for each unit.

Kilowatt Demand โ€“ Provided by an analog point that is assigned to each pump station.

Pump Station Power Usage โ€“ Determined as follows:

  • If there is an analog point configured for Kilowatt Demand (configured for Station Efficiency), use its value.

  • Otherwise, sum the configured Maximum Energy Consumption values from each running pump in the pump station.

Warning Messages Associated with Pump Power Management

The warning messages associated with Pump Power Management have been implemented as Business Logic Tier (BLT) objects. They are assigned to status or multistate records, representing a pump using the Rules Validation Engine (RVE) utility.

A set of BLT objects have been created to return the desired information to the client application. To use the BLT objects as a pump start check, they must be assigned to the status or multistate records representing the pump in question using the RVE utility. These are:

upmOffPeakPowerProcessor

When Off-Peak rates apply, the current maximum authorized power for the pumpstation during Off-Peak periods should not be exceeded.

If current period is Off-Peak:

  1. Get the current pump station power usage (this is calculated by aggregating the Maximum Energy Consumption associated with each unit).

  2. Get the Maximum Authorized Power for Off-Peak at the period that applies to the current date from the configured power authorization.

  3. If the expected power usage is greater than the Maximum Authorized Power, return a rule violation warning.

    upmOnPeakPowerProcessor

When On-Peak rates apply, the current maximum authorized power for the pump station during On-Peak periods should not be exceeded.

    1. Get the current pump station power usage (this is calculated by aggregating the Maximum Energy Consumption of each associated unit).

    2. Get the Maximum Authorized Power for On-Peak at the period that applies to the current date from the configured power authorization.

    3. If the expected power usage is greater than the Maximum Authorized Power, a rule violation warning will be returned.

      upmOnPeak

On-Peak electricity charges should be avoided.

If this is an On-Peak period, a warning will be provided.

      upmFirstStartCycle

Avoid starting a pump if it has not already been started during the current electrical billing period.

      1. The count of pump starts for the current billing period for the unit is retrieved from the pumpstation record.

      2. If the count is zero, a warning will be provided.

        upmTooSoon

Avoid starting a pump if insufficient time has elapsed since the last run.

        1. The time of the last pump start is retrieved from the unit record.

        2. The time elapsed between the last pump start and the current is calculated.

        3. If time elapsed is less than 60 minutes, a warning will be issued.

          State Change Alarms

The Application Calculation Engine (ACE) script "unitAlarmStandard" is triggered periodically using the Job Scheduler (JSH) application. Four parameters for execution are included:

          • A string representing the database access path for the pumpstation record.

          • An integer representing a 4-bit bitmap. The bitmap indicates which violations to alarm on. A value of 15 (binary 1111) will result in all rules to be checked for violation.

          • An integer representing the number of minutes before a predicted violation.

          • An integer representing the number of minutes to wait before re-issuing an alarm.

The script will access the data provided through the Pump Power Management application and determine if a rule is violated. If so, the script issues an alarm. For information on how to configure ACE scripts, refer to the Advanced Database Editor (ADE) Administrator documentation.

The following table describes the State Change Alarms that can be issued.

          Name

          Rule

          Method

          Bitmap Parameter

          Associated Alarm Message

          Off-Peak Power Exceeded

When Off-Peak rates apply, the current Maximum Authorized Power for the pump station during Off-Peak periods should not be exceeded.

          If Current Period is Off-Peak:

          1. The current pumpstation power usage is retrieved from the pumpstation.

          2. Get the Maximum Authorized Power for Off-Peak that is configured for the period that applies to the current date.

            • If the power usage is greater than the Maximum Authorized Power and the alarm has not been issued previously within the number of minutes provided from the fourth parameter of the script call, the alarm will be issued.

0001 (This is used to enable the rule.)

            PumpStation has exceeded Off-Peak power.

            On-Peak Power Exceeded

When On-Peak rates apply, the current maximum authorized power for the pumpstation during On-Peak period should not be exceeded.

            1. Get the current pump station power usage.

            2. Get the Maximum Authorized Power for On-Peak that is configured for the period that applies to the current date.

            3. If the power usage is greater than the Maximum Authorized Power for On-Peak and the alarm has not been issued previously within the number of minutes provided from the fourth parameter of the script call, the alarm will be issued.

              0010

              PumpStation has exceeded On-Peak power.

              Pending On-Peak Power Exceeded

When On-Peak rates are pending, there is a check to ensure that the power in use does not exceed the Maximum Authorized Power during the On-Peak period.

              If:

The current period is Off-Peak and the period will become On-Peak within the time period provided from the third parameter of the script call.

              Then:

              1. Get the power usage information from the pumpstation.

              2. Get the Maximum Authorized Power for On-Peak that is configured for the period that is pending.

              3. If the power usage is greater than the Maximum Authorized Power and the alarm has not been issued previously within the time period provided from the fourth parameter of the script call, issue the alarm.

                0100

"Pump Station is about to exceed on-peak power."

                Pending Off-Peak While Pumping

There is no associated rule. The purpose is to alert the Controller that a running pump is about to go Off-Peak. A low-level alarm is issued for an alert.

                If:

                • Current period is On-Peak,and

                • The period become Off-Peak within the time period provided from the third parameter of the script call, and

                • At least one pump at the station is running.

                  Then the following will occur:

The alarm will be issued if it has not been issued previously within the time period provided from the fourth parameter of the script call.

                1000

PumpStation is about to revert to off-peak power.
