Understand APS Device types and what they map to in the RTDB

The following table describes the APS Device types that can be used to define Pipeline Flow Networks and how they are mapped in the RTDB.

APS Device Type

Description

Mapping in the RTDB

Pump

Defines a transport mechanism with the Pipeline Flow Network.

Pump

Valve

ManVal

Defines a flow control point within the Pipeline Flow Network.

Valve

CheckValve

Pipeline

Defines a segment between two nodes within the Pipeline Flow Network. Pipeline has an unrestricted flow direction. CheckValve has a right-only restricted flow direction. For more information on Check Valves, see Understand check valves.

APS Pipeline is only used when defining Overview level Pipeline Flow Network.

Segment

Tank

Defines a storage receptacle within the Pipeline Flow Network.

Tank

Node

Defines a point in the Pipeline Flow Network where flow splits or merges. For more information on Nodes, see Understand nodes.

APS Node is only used when defining Station level Pipeline Flow Networks.

Node

Transmitter

Defines field data interface equipment in the Pipeline Flow Network.

APS Transmitters are used when defining Overview and Station level Pipeline Flow Networks.

Note: In Simconstruct, APS Transmitter type is translated to Meter for Station level Pipeline Flow Networks.

Supported APS Transmitter types include temperature, flowrate, pressure, level, concentration, detector, diff_pressure, flow, flowvolu, and misc.

If the subtype element is not provided, the transmitter will be created with the type misc by default.

Transmitter

PointOfInterest

Defines a Point of Interest (POI) within the Flow Network.

A POI is a logical device used to specify a location in the Flow Network. This location has an underlying status or multistate point that can be set by other applications. The change in state can then be used by the Line Blockage application to perform automatic pump shutdown of all pumps upstream and/or downstream of this location. For more information on this functionality, see Configure Point of Interest (POI) objects.

Notes: To add a POI device, make sure to navigate to the FlowNetwork section on the left pane.

The POI device can be connected to Node, StationInlet, StationOutlet, Tank, Boundary, and InjectDeliver devices—as long as these objects are not part of an Interconnect sequence. For more information on Interconnect sequences, see Understand Flow Network Model translation.

The POI device uses a connection type of Meter.

Because it is not included in the flow, multiple POIs can be attached to any single device in the Flow Network Model.

POI

Station

Defines a nested flow network composed of a collection of devices and connections. Stations included as devices define nested Pipeline Flow Networks within a parent Pipeline Flow Network.

The device name in the parent network and the nested network name have to be the same to generate a nested network.

NestedNetwork

BranchEnd

BranchStart

Boundary

APS BranchEnd and BranchStart define the boundaries of a pipeline within Overview level Pipeline Flow Networks. For more information on Boundary elements, please see Understand Boundary elements .

APS Boundary defines the boundaries within Station level Pipeline Flow Networks.

Network Outlet

StationInlet

StationOutlet

Defines the boundaries of the Pipeline Flow Network within a Station. For more information on Boundary elements, please see Understand Boundary elements .

Network Outlet

InjectDeliver

Used in the definition of an Interconnect object that connects the current Flow Network with another Flow Network. The connected Flow Networks are also known as a "Mega Flow Network."

For the InjectDeliver device to be included in the definition of an Interconnect object, the following configuration is expected:

  • The APS InjectDeliver Node Type is set to NetworkConnection.

  • The APS InjectDeliver Direction is set to Injection or Delivery.

  • The APS InjectDeliver is defined at the station or nested network level only.

For more information on how Interconnect objects are defined, see Understand Flow Network Model translation.

Interconnect

InjectDeliver

Any injection device not complying with the interconnect rule will be imported into SimConstruct as a meter.
