Mass calculation in Batch Tracking

The Batch Tracking application tracks mass at the following granularities:

Fragment

For fragments that are automatically inserted into the pipeline to capture quantities provided by a metering source (Virtual Flow Computer or Batch Transfer), the mass delta provided by the metering source for each processing cycle is used to continually update their total mass.

When fragments are automatically created as the batch moves across different segments, or when they are manually created or edited by the Controller, mass is calculated using the following formula and taking units into consideration:

Fragment Mass = Fragment Volume x Batch Density

Batch

For batches that are automatically inserted into the pipeline to capture quantities provided by a metering source (Virtual Flow Computer or Batch Transfer), the mass delta provided by the metering source each processing cycle is used to continually update their total mass.

For batches that are manually created into the pipeline or edited by the Controller, mass is calculated using the following formula and taking units into consideration:

Batch Mass = Batch Volume x Batch Density

For batches that receive a side-stream injection while transitioning between segments, the mass delta provided each processing cycle by the side-stream metering source is used to continually update the total mass of the main batch. In this case, the batch density will also be recalculated as a weighted average to account for the density of the injected product.

Note: In this scenario, the mass displacement from the upstream segment into the downstream segment will be based on a calculated density at the fragment level using the total fragment mass divided by the total fragment volume within the upstream segment. This may result in a density that is slightly different from the batch weighted average density. This means that while the batch is in transition between the two segments, multiplying the fragment volume by the batch density will not necessarily yield the fragment mass reported by the system.

Pipeline segment

For pipeline segments, mass is calculated by aggregating the mass values associated with all fragments within the segment.

Pipeline segments also keep track of the delta mass between processing cycles and an hourly delta mass using the following formulas:

Segment Delta Mass = Segment Current Cycle Mass - Segment Previous Cycle Mass

Segment Hourly Delta Mass = Segment Top of Hour Mass - Segment Previous Top of Hour Mass

Section

For sections, mass is calculated by aggregating the mass values associated with all segments within the section (see Pipeline segment mass calculation above for more details).

Pipeline sections also keep track of the delta mass between processing cycles and an hourly delta mass using the following formulas:

Section Delta Mass = Section Current Cycle Mass - Section Previous Cycle Mass

Section Hourly Delta Mass = Section Top of Hour Mass - Section Previous Top of Hour Mass
