Understand and respond to a Command Violation

If you issue a command to a device represented by a status or multistate record and the command will initiate a product transfer, Product Transfer Checking verification will be performed. There are two ways in which the system can check for Product Transfer Checking rule violations: using an RVE rule if it has been configured, or by using the Product Monitor, which runs silently in the background looking for violations.

Using RVE Rules to assess compatibility

The Rules Validation Engine (RVE) checks the Source and Destination records for compatibility against a set of rules.

The Product Compatibility and Product Transfer Checking tables are used to define the compatibility rules. If the command is validated, it will proceed without interruption. If a Product Transfer Checking rule is violated, you will be presented with a description of the violation and be given the option to Override despite the violation.

Note: After you have elected to Override the Command Violation, the Product Monitor continues to run in the background. If there is a violation indicating a mixture of two incompatible products, an alarm and event will be recorded in the Alarm and Event Summary. However, two products that have been designated incompatible will be allowed to mix.

To override a Command Violation produced by the Rules Validation Engine

  1. From Command Interlock window, select the Override button to allow the command to proceed.

Note: Selecting Override will allow the two products that have been designated incompatible to mix.

  2. Select Cancel to accept the validation.

There are a few types of commands that can use RVE rules to assess their compatibility. Consider the following examples:

  • Start command to a pump

  • Start command to a DRA injector

  • Open command to a valve

Using the Product Monitor application to assess compatibility

Like the RVE rules, the Product Monitor application is designed to continuously monitor for uncommanded changes to associated values and objects. It is responsible for the alarm and event messages that are recorded in the Alarm and Event Summary when the Product Transfer Checking application experiences a violation.
