Understand Tank Direction

AVEVA Enterprise SCADA provides information on the state of the tank. This allows the Controller to ascertain the state of the tank and/or the direction of movement within the tank. Tanking will indicate when the tank is in the following states:

  • Stationary

  • Filling

  • Emptying

  • Idle

  • Unknown

This feature functions with both sources of remote input featured on the Remote Input tab of the tank Row Edit. (The Direct Field Source as well as an OASyS RealTime Source.)

If you have selected Direct Field Source as the Source Type, state information will be gathered in the following ways:

  • If the tank is set to Idle (either through the use of the Auto Idle feature or by a Controller setting the tank to Idle), the Tank Direction displayed in the easy eXtended Operator Station (ezXOS) will display Idle.

  • If the tank has a positive flow rate, calculated based on the Average Flowrate Period on the Tank Configuration tab of the tank Row Edit dialog, then the Tank Direction displayed in ezXOS will be set to Filling.

  • If the tank has a negative flow rate, calculated based on the Average Flowrate Period on the Tank Configuration tab of the tank Row Edit dialog, then the Tank Direction displayed in ezXOS will be set to Emptying.

  • If the tank has a flow rate of zero or a very small flow rate (negligible flow), then the Tank Direction is set to Stationary. A flow rate of 0.04 is considered a very small flow rate. This is the equivalent of one barrel a day.

If you have selected OASyS RealTime Source as the Source Type, state information will be gathered in the following ways:

  • If the OASyS RealTime Source set for the tank has an Input Type of manual entry, then the Tank Direction is "Unknown."

  • If the OASyS RealTime Source set for the tank (defined on the Remote Input tab of the tank Row Edit) has an Input Type of telemetered and the OASyS RealTime Source (defined on the Analogs tab of the tank Row Edit dialog) has an Input Type of manual entry, then the Tank Direction displayed in ezXOS is "Unknown," because the values on each of these tabs are in conflict.

  • If the OASyS RealTime Source that is set for the tank is neither in "manual entry" nor is it a "telemetered" point that is currently in manual mode (this is an item that is configured by the Controller), then the following is true:

    • If the tank is set to Idle (either through the use of the Auto Idle feature or by a Controller setting the tank to Idle) the tank direction will be set to Idle.

    • If the tank is not Idle.

    • If the tank has a positive flow rate, calculated based on the Average Flowrate Period on the Tank Configuration tab of the tank Row Edit dialog, the Tank Direction displayed in ezXOS is Filling.

    • If the tank has a negative flow rate, calculated based on the Average Flowrate Period on the Tank Configuration tab of the tank Row Edit dialog, the Tank Direction displayed in ezXOS is Emptying.

    • If the tank has a zero or very small flow rate (negligible flow) then the Tank Direction displayed in ezXOS is Stationary. A flow rate of 0.4 is considered to be a very small flow rate. This is the equivalent of one barrel a day.
