AVEVA Pipeline Operations for Liquids

Understand valve message sets

As with any RealTime database (RTDB) record, the message set is assigned to a valve record by referencing the Base Message field to the first row of the message set. The number of rows in the message set is variable and depends on the number of states polled by the assigned status or multistate point, if one is assigned (that is, the valve is of Physical type).

In the case where there is no assigned status or multistate (that is, the valve is of Synthetic or Logical type), all states are determined by the Valve application. Use the default message set with foreground and severity colors modified as desired.

Observe the following when setting up the message set where status or multistate is assigned.

  • In the first block of rows, the order number will correspond to the integer number of the state returned by polling. At minimum, polling can always return at least one Open-type state and at least one Closed-type state. For example, if the assigned status returns 0 for Error, 1 for Open, 2 for Closed, and 3 for Transit, the first four rows of the message set will be, in order, the Error message, the Open message, the Closed message, and the Transit message.

  • The Valve application also requires an Opening and a Closing state. If no states corresponding to these are polled, the Valve application can assign this based on a polled Transit state and knowledge of the state prior to going to Transit. Opening and Closing state messages are added after the first block when these states are set by the application. From the above example, the complete set of messages would be the following:

    • 0: Error

    • 1: Open

    • 2: Closed

    • 3: Transit

    • 4: Opening

    • 5: Closing

The following table describes the default message set. States 0–3 are states provided by the status or multistate point assigned to the valve record. States 4 and 5 are either provided by a multistate point or are set when a status or multistate point was polled in a Transit state but the Valve application has information on the transit direction. State 6 is only set from polling a multistate point. The AVEVA Pipeline Operations for Liquids installation includes a default "valve" message set that can be used on all valves created within the RTDB. Valve message sets can be altered or replaced as required when installing AVEVA Pipeline Operations for Liquids. However, for full functionality, this message set must contain thirteen records in the order described in the table.

Number

Name

Description

0

Error

An error condition was returned when polling the status or multistate point. This state is used to indicate that the valve is currently in an unknown error state.

1

Open

This state is used to indicate that the valve is currently in an Open state.

2

Closed

This state is used to indicate that the valve is currently in a Closed state.

3

Transit

This state is used to indicate that the valve is in a transit state in an unknown direction.

4

Opening

This state is used to indicate that the valve is in a transit state from Closed to Open.

5

Closing

This state is used to indicate that the valve is in a transit state from Open to Closed.

6

Stopped

This state is used to indicate that the valve is in a transit stopped state. It was stopped while in an Opening or Closing state.

7

Flowpath Indication - No Pump/Station Shutdown

This message is not used for a valve state. It is used to specify the background image to display, indicating that closing the valve will not trigger a shutdown of pumps or stations. It is intended for use by Control Room Management (CRM) objects.

8

Flowpath Indication - Pump/Station Shutdown

This message is not used for a valve state. It is used to specify the background image to display, indicating that closing the valve will trigger a shutdown of connected pumps or stations. It is intended for use by CRM objects.

9

In Service

This message is not used for a valve state. It is used to specify the image to display, indicating the In Service logic state. It is intended for use by CRM objects.

10

Out of Logic

This message is not used for a valve state. It is used to specify the image to display, indicating the Out of Logic logic state. It is intended for use by CRM objects.

11

Out of Service Open

This message is not used for a valve state. It is used to specify the image to display, indicating the Out of Service Open logic state. It is intended for use by CRM objects.

12

Out of Service Closed

This message is not used for a valve state. It is used to specify the image to display, indicating the Out of Service Closed logic state. It is intended for use by CRM objects.
