Configure the Alarming tab of the Tank record

The Alarming tab is used to configure the alarm limits of the tank. Instrument fail, level, Rate of Change (ROC), and creep alarms can all be defined on this tab. The checkboxes on each panel must be selected before the corresponding alarm settings can be configured.
Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) not capable of sensing "out-of-range" failures (that have instrument failure checking enabled) will generate alarms whenever the raw value is outside the raw range.
Note: If Use Extended Strap is selected on the Level to Volume tab, you no longer need to configure the Alarming tab as the necessary information populates as part of the CSV file import process.
To configure the Alarming tab of the tank record
-
Open the tank record. For more information on opening a tank record, see Opening the Tank Record.
The tank Row Edit dialog appears.

-
Select the Alarming tab.
The Alarming tab appears.

-
In the Alarm Deadband field, enter volume deadband. If a tank enters an alarm state, the Tanking application does not consider it to have returned to the Normal state until the volume changes by more than this deadband. This prevents minor fluctuations in volume from repeatedly putting the tank into and out of the alarm state.
-
To enable High-High-level alarming, select the HiHi Alarm Check checkbox.
-
To enable High-level alarming, select the Hi Alarm Check checkbox.
-
To enable Normal-fill alarming, select the Normal Fill Alarm Check checkbox.
-
To enable Normal-empty alarming, select the Normal Empty Alarm Check checkbox.
-
To enable Low-level alarming, select the Lo Alarm Check checkbox.
-
To enable Low-Low-level alarming, select the LoLo Alarm Check checkbox.
-
In the HiHi Alarm Limit field, enter a limit for the level in the tank. If the level exceeds this limit, the Tanking application will generate a High-High alarm.
-
In the Hi Alarm Limit field, enter a limit for the level in the tank. If the level rises exceeds limit, the Tanking application will generate a High alarm.
-
In the Normal Fill Alarm Limit field, enter a limit for the level in the tank. If the level exceeds this limit, the Tanking application will generate a Normal-fill alarm
-
In the Normal Empty Alarm Limit field, enter a limit for the level in the tank. If the level falls below this limit, the Tanking application will generate a Normal-empty alarm
-
In the Lo Alarm Limit field, enter a limit that if the level in the tank falls below this limit, the Tanking application will generate a Low-Low alarm.
-
In the LoLo Alarm Limit field, enter a limit that if the level in the tank falls below this limit, the Tanking application will generate a Low-Low alarm.
-
To enable ROC alarming, select the Enable ROC Alarming checkbox.
-
In the Filling ROC Limit (Units/Hr) field, enter a filling rate of change value between 0 and 1,000,000. If the tank flow rate exceeds this limit, the tank will then be in an ROC Alarm state—this state may result in a non-persistent alarm if not inhibited.
-
In the Emptying ROC Limit (Units/Hr) field, enter the emptying rate of change absolute value between 0 and 1,000,000. If the tank flow rate exceeds this limit, the tank will then be in an ROC Alarm state—this state may result in a non-persistent alarm if not inhibited.
-
-
To enable creep detection alarming, select the Enable Creep Alarming checkbox.
-
Select the Creep alarm deviation type you want to use.
-
Level enables both the Positive Level Deviation Threshold and the Negative Level Deviation Threshold fields.
-
Volume enables both the Positive Volume Deviation Threshold and the Negative Volume Deviation Threshold fields.
-
-
In the Positive Level Deviation Threshold field, enter a creep level threshold. If the tank is declared idle and the tank level rises by this amount or more, the Tanking application generates an alarm.
-
In the Negative Level Deviation Threshold field, enter a creep level threshold (using a positive numeric). If the tank is declared idle and the tank level drops by this amount or more, the Tanking application generates an alarm.
-
In the Positive Volume Deviation Threshold field, enter a creep volume threshold. If the tank is declared idle and the tank volume increases by this amount or more, the Tanking application generates an alarm.
-
In the Negative Volume Deviation Threshold field, enter a creep volume threshold (using a positive numeric). If the tank is declared idle and the tank volume decreases by this amount or more, the Tanking application generates an alarm.
-
In the Creep Check Cycle (HH:MM:SS) field, enter a value that determines how often the tank will perform a check for a deviation in the level.
-
In the Creep Alarm Timeout field, enter a timeout period. The timeout period applies once a deviation alarm condition exists. If subsequent readings during this period stay within your specified deadbands, then the deviation alarm will clear. A value of zero disables this functionality.
-
To enable Creep Alarm Suppression, select the Enable Creep Alarm Suppression checkbox.
-
If Enable Creep Alarm Suppression is selected, in the Creep Threshold Violation Limit (2 to 10) field, enter a value that will determine how many creep violations will be allowed before a creep alarm is issued. A value must be entered in this field in order to save (even if Creep Alarm Suppression is not enabled). By default, it is set to 2.
Note: If you insert tank records into the Advanced Database Editor (ADE) through other means, no validation will be performed to ensure this criteria is met. This record cannot be saved or cloned until a valid value is entered in the Creep Threshold Violation Limit field.
-
In the Enable Realarm (0-255 mins) field, enter the number of minutes after which an acknowledged alarm should re-alarm. Enabling the re-alarm brings critical and high priority alarms back into focus by re-annunciating them after a configurable amount of time if the condition that caused the alarm still exists.
-
(Optional) To enable User High level alarming, select the User Hi Alarm Check checkbox.
-
In the User Hi Alarm Limit field, enter a value that if the level in the tank exceeds this value, the Tanking application will generate a User-Hi alarm.
-
-
(Optional) To enable User Low level alarming, select the User Lo Alarm Check checkbox.
-
In the User Lo Alarm Limit field, enter a value that if the level in the tank falls below this value, the Tanking application will generate a User-Low alarm.
-
-
In the Disable Alarm Point field, select (...) to configure a status point.
Note: If the selected status point is in an abnormal state, then the application will no longer process this tank record.
-
(Optional) If you want to enable email alarm notification, select the Enable Email Notification checkbox. For more information about the items in the Email Alarm Notification section of the Alarming tab of the tank Row Edit dialog, refer to Volume 1 of the RealTime Administrator documentation.
-
Select Safety Point to configure safety points. For more information about configuring safety points, refer to Volume 1 of the RealTime Administrator documentation.
