Understand connection types

Synthetic Valves and Logical Valves can be configured as either Series or Parallel. As Synthetic Valves states are not calculated, but received from a status or multistate point, the connection type configuration will only affect how a Synthetic Valve's logical mode is calculated.

The calculation of a Logical Valve's current state will be affected by the connection type in the following ways:

  • Series โ€” When Logical Valves are configured as Series, child valves are connected end-to-end, and only a single flow path exists in the valve. If any child valve within a Series connection is closed, the logical parent valve will be calculated as closed.

  • Parallel โ€” When Logical Valves are configured as Parallel, child valves are connected independently to the source and destination, and multiple flow paths exist in the valve. If all child valves within a Parallel connection are closed, the logical parent valve will be calculated as closed.

Note: If the valve is configured as a Physical Valve, the Connection Type option on the valve record will not be available.

For Synthetic Valves and Logical Valves, the logical mode and valve position of Logical Valves are calculated as follows:

  • For valves in Series, the child valve with the highest precedence determines the service mode of the parent Synthetic Valve:

    Service Mode

    Precedence

    OSC

    Highest

    OSO

    OOL

    In Service

    Lowest

If the valve is In Service and configured as a Logical Valve, the child valve with the highest precedence determines the current state of the parent Logical Valve:

    Current State

    Precedence

    Closed

    Highest

    Travel Closing

    Travel Unknown

    Unknown (ERROR)

    Travel Opening

    Open

    Lowest

  • For valves in Parallel:

    • If any child valve is open, the Logical Valve is considered open. Synthetic Valves still receive their current state from a status or multistate point.

    • If any child valve is in an Out of Logic state, the parent valve is considered out of logic.

These two components are combined to determine the logical mode of the parent valve.

If the valve is In Service and configured as a Logical Valve, the child valve with the highest precedence determines the logical mode of the parent Synthetic Valve:

      Current Status

      Precedence

      Open

      Highest

      Travel Opening

      Unknown (ERROR)

      Travel Unknown

      Travel Closing

      Closed

      Lowest

Note: For child valves that are reported as Stopped or Error, the previous state is used in the evaluation of the parent Synthetic or Logical Valve. For example, if the child valve had a state of Travel Closing, and entered a Stopped state, the child valve would continue to be evaluated as Travel Closing by the parent valve.
