Understand Protected Location

A Protected Location refers to a Flow Network (a station) that has its own set of unique rules to prevent it from entering an unsafe operating condition. Each Protected Location is associated with a single Flow Network. Flow Networks can exist at any granularity—nested within other Flow Networks, or existing as a top-level parent network.

The following, two sub-applications make up the overall entity known as Protected Location:

Low Mode

The Low Mode application consists of a Mode Detector (a status point) used to switch the Protected Location between higher and lower operating intensities (High mode and Low mode, respectively). Before the application allows the Protected Location to switch to High mode, it checks for violations on certain upstream and downstream analog, rate, status, multistate, pump, valve, and/or remote points. If it encounters one or more violations, the application alerts you and does not proceed with the command. You have the option to override the warning or fix the violation conditions. After you fix the violation conditions, the application allows the Protected Location to switch to High mode.

If the application detects a violated condition when a Protected Location is in High mode, it traverses upstream and switches an Administrator-configured number of Protected Locations it encounters to Low mode via the configured action sequence associated with each Protected Location.

Shutdown Sequence

The Shutdown Sequence application consists of a number of configured steps that the system executes in order to shut down all pumps at a Flow Network when a CLOSE command blocks off flow to a pump such that the pump is:

  • Upstream blocked.

  • Downstream blocked.

  • Shut in (blocked on both sides).

Note: Components on the control displays are enabled or disabled based on the current active mode's privileges. This is configured through the records' controllable privileges in DistribuSyS. If you do not have permission to control the record, the following message will appear on your control displays: Active mode prohibits control from this system. Talk to your Administrator for more information.
