Each tank element connects to a record in the tank database. During computation, the Flow Network will inspect the tank record to determine if it is acting as an injection, delivery or indeterminate flow device based on its current state. The external flow direction field on the tank table is inspected first to determine if the tank is either an Injection or Delivery device. This is stored in the tankDirection.externalState field in the RealTime database (RTDB) on each tank record.
For more information on how to configure a tank's external flow direction, see Configure the Auto Idle/Ext Flow Tab of the Tank Record.
If this field does not report the tank as being in either a Receiving or Delivering state, then the Flow Network will inspect the current flow rate of the Tank. If the flow rate is positive (the tank is filling), then the tank will be treated as a Delivery device. If the flow rate is negative (the tank is emptying), then the tank will be treated as an Injection device. If neither the external state nor the flow rate results in the tank being treated as an Injection or Delivery device, the tank will be treated as an indeterminate source of flow.
