Configure a Physical valve

  • Last UpdatedApr 24, 2025
  • 3 minute read

The selected valve record will represent a real existing valve if the Valve Type is configured as a Physical Valve.

When the Valve Type is configured as a Physical Valve:

  • A Connection Type cannot be configured.

  • The Path must be specified (underlying multistate or status record).

  • You can configure how each state of the underlying point in interpreted (State Configuration). For more information, see Configuring the State Configuration.

  • Optional: Command Open may be configured if it is supported by the underlying point.

  • Optional: Command Close may be configured if it is supported by the underlying point.

  • Optional: Command Stop may be configured if it is supported by the underlying point.

  • You can configure a Logic Excluded Mode Time Out.

  • Inhibits cannot be configured. Alarm and Event inhibit flags are configured on the underlying point.

To configure a physical valve

  1. Open the valve record. For more information on opening a valve record, see Opening the Valve Record.

The valve Row Edit dialog appears.

  2. From the Valve Type dropdown list, select Physical Valve.

  3. Optional: In the Priority Display field, enter the priority display for the valve.

Note: If a valve record is automatically created by the Flow Network, the Priority Display configuration of the underlying status/multistate record will be inherited. Administrators and Controllers can later change the Priority Display field on the valve or the underlying record independent of each other.

  4. Optional: In the Parent Valve field, select (...).

    The Parent valve dialog appears.

  5. Select the Name of the Parent valve record. Select Accept.

  6. In the Path field, select (...).

Note: Physical Valves require a Path to be selected to provide input and output telemetry for the valve record.

    The Path Selector dialog appears.

  7. Select status or multistate from the Table dropdown list.

  8. In the Record field, select (...).

Depending on the table selection, the status or multistate dialog will appear. For more information, refer to the Advanced Database Editor (ADE) Administrator documentation.

  9. Select the Name of the record. Select Accept.

  10. From the Path Selector dialog, select Accept.

  11. Configure the State Configuration. For more information, see Configuring the State Configuration.

  12. Optional: Configure the valve command state for the Command Open field. For more information, see Configure the valve command state.

  13. Optional: Configure the valve command state for the Command Close field. For more information, see Configure the valve command state.

  14. Optional: Configure the valve command state for the Command Stop field. For more information, see Configure the valve command state.

  15. Optional: Enter the number of minutes in the Logic Excluded Mode Time Out field.

Note: When a valve is configured to an Out of Logic mode by a Controller, the valve may automatically return to the In Service state after a desired number of minutes by configuring this field.

A configuration value of zero indicates that the record should never automatically revert to an In Service state. Any modification to this field or to the Out of Logic mode will reset any current timeouts.

  16. Save the record.

  17. If the selected Parent Valve was not a synthetic or logical valve, you will receive an error message, and the record will not be saved.

Notes: For Physical Valves, Inhibits cannot be configured from the Inhibits tab.

Inhibit settings on the point selected in the Path field will be used when generating alarms and events.
