Configure the Main tab on the Valve record

  • Last UpdatedApr 24, 2025
  • 7 minute read

The Main tab is used to set up the basic properties of the valve record. It enables you to configure a relationship to the telemetered point, if it exists. It also serves to define how the telemetered point states map to a valve position.

Note: The Description, Safety Related, Station, Point Class, Point SubClass, Short Description, Well Unit, and Display Order fields on valves are read-only when a valve is configured as Physical or Synthetic. If a Path is specified, the corresponding value of the underlying status or multistate field will be automatically used as the value for the valve record. These fields can only be modified from the underlying status or multistate field. If a different value is imported using Microsoft's Excel or another method, the new value will be discarded when a save occurs. When valves are configured as Logical, these fields behave normally.

To configure the Main tab of the Valve record

  1. Open the valve record. For more information on opening a valve record, see Opening the Valve Record.

The valve Row Edit dialog appears.

  2. In the Name field, enter the name of the valve record. This value must conform to basic AVEVA Enterprise SCADA naming conventions and be unique for all valve records.

  3. (Optional) In the Description field, enter description information about the record. If the valve is configured as a Physical or Synthetic valve, the description of the underlying status or multistate point configured in the Path field will be forwarded as read-only into the Description field of the current valve record.

  4. To mark the valve as safety related, select the Safety Related checkbox. Safety-related points can be quickly searched by a Controller. If the valve is configured as a Physical or Synthetic valve, the Safety Related value of the underlying status or multistate point configured in the Path field will be forwarded as read-only into the Safety Related field of the current valve record. For additional information, refer to the AVEVA Pipeline Operations for Liquids Controller documentation.

  5. Select the Commissioning Required checkbox when the point is ready to be commissioned. When this checkbox is selected, the point will appear in the Point Verification Summary. This checkbox will be cleared after the point has been commissioned.

  6. In the Group field, click (...) to select the group assignment to which the valve record belongs.

  7. (Optional) In the Station field, click (...) to select the current valve's associated station record. If the valve is configured as a Physical or Synthetic valve, the Station of the underlying status or multistate point configured in the Path field will be forwarded as read-only into the Station field of the current valve record.

  8. (Optional) In the Point Class field, click (...) to select the point class categorization for the valve record. If the valve is configured as a Physical or Synthetic valve, the Point Class of the underlying status or multistate point configured in the Path field will be forwarded as read-only into the Point Class field of the current valve record.

  9. (Optional) In the Point SubClass field, click (...) to select the point subclass categorization for the valve record. If the valve is configured as a Physical or Synthetic valve, the Point SubClass of the underlying status or multistate point configured in the Path field will be forwarded as read-only into the Point SubClass field of the current valve record.

Note:The Point Class field is used to allow the Administrator to configure alarm severity. For further information about the Point Class and Point SubClass fields, refer to Volume 1 of the RealTime Administrator documentation.

  10. In the Dataset field, click (...) to associate this record with the privileges assigned for each system and mode. Once a record is assigned to a dataset value, the dataset can only be changed to a value for which the system has a privilege record.

A record's dataset cannot be changed in such a way that the system can no longer access the record.

  11. In the Base Message field, click (...) to select the base message for standard message set usage. The alarms that occur as a result of their associated base messages are used to indicate that the valve has undergone certain noteworthy changes, not to indicate that there is anything wrong with the state. The selected message set must conform to the requirements for valve message sets.

  12. (Optional) In the Short Description field, enter the short description information about the record. If the valve is configured as a Physical or Synthetic valve, the Short Description of the underlying status or multistate point configured in the Path field will be forwarded as read-only into the Short Description field of the current valve record.

Note: The Short Description field for valves cannot be modified through a Microsoft Excel import because the field pulls its value from the underlying multistate or status point. If you attempt to modify the field, a warning will indicate that the field cannot be updated. For more information on importing a Microsoft Excel file, refer to the Advanced Database Editor (ADE) Administrator documentation.

  13. (Optional) In the Well Unit field, enter the well unit description for the valve record. If the valve is configured as a Physical or Synthetic valve, the Well Unit of the underlying status or multistate point configured in the Path field will be forwarded as read-only into the Well Unit field of the current valve record.

  14. (Optional) In the Priority Display field, enter the easy eXtended Operator Station (ezXOS) display you want to be associated with the Priority Display icon on the Valve Control dialog. If the valve is configured as a Physical or Synthetic valve, the Priority Display of the underlying status or multistate point configured in the Path field will be forwarded as read-only into the Priority Display field of the current valve record.

Note: If a valve record is automatically created by the Flow Network, the Priority Display configuration of the underlying status/multistate record will be inherited. Administrators and Controllers can later change the Priority Display field on the valve or the underlying record independent of each other.

  15. (Optional) In the Display Order field, enter the the display order for the valve record. If the valve is configured as a Physical or Synthetic valve, the display order of the underlying status or multistate point configured in the Path field will be forwarded as read-only into the Display Order field of the current valve record.

  16. In the Parent Valve field, click (...) to select whether the valve is to configured as being part of a synthetic or logical valve by selecting another valve record. The selected valve must be configured as either a Synthetic Valve or a Logical Valve in the Valve Type configuration option.

  17. From the Valve Type dropdown list, select the valve type. For more information on configuring valve types, see the following sections:

  18. From the Connection Type dropdown list, select the connection type.

Note: The default for the Connection Type is Series. For more information on connection types, see Understand connection types.

  19. In the Path field, click (...) to select the path to the status or multistate record associated with this valve.

    • For Physical Valves, this is the path to the status or multistate record for sending commands and reading the telemetered state.

    • For Synthetic Valves, this is the path to the status or multistate record for sending commands. The state and data quality are not read from this path but are, instead, evaluated from the Physical Valves that make up this Synthetic Valve.

    • For Logical Valves, the Path is not used and is unavailable for edit. You cannot send commands to a Logical Valve. The state and data quality are read from the Physical Valves that make up this Logical Valve.

  20. To open the State Configuration dialog, select State Configuration. For more information, see State Configuration dialog box.

  21. In the Command Open field, click (...) to select the command string that will be sent to the point in the Path field when an open command is executed on this valve. For more information, see Configure the valve command state.

  22. In the Command Close field, click (...) to select the command string that will be sent to the point in the Path field when a close command is executed on this valve. For more information, see Configure the valve command state.

  23. In the Command Stop field, click (...) to select the command string that will be sent to the point in the Path field when a stop command is executed on this valve. For more information, see Configure the valve command state.

  24. In the Logic Excluded Mode Time Out field, enter the desired number of minutes at which you would like the valve to return to In Service when configured to an Out of Logic mode by the Controller.

Notes: A configuration value of zero indicates that the record should never automatically revert to an In Service state. Any modification to this field or to the Out of Logic mode will reset any current timeouts.

Logic Excluded Mode Time Out is only available for editing when the Valve Type is Physical Valve.
