Understanding the notch function

Creates a notch

With the Notch function on the Part Editor tab, in the Create group, you can create notches on a plate in the 2D view. You can create notches at plate corners or along the plate contour (edge).

When you select Notch, the Common Interaction Engine (CIE) tool opens. Move the pointer into the 2D view to display a notch preview and the Select position or Finish prompt. The notch preview updates dynamically as you move the pointer along the contour or to a corner.

The designation is used to specify the notch geometry. Predefined notch standards are used. Refer to Standard Notches for more information.

You can define the notch location in either of the following ways:

  • Picking a location

  • Select a corner or contour position directly in the 2D view.

  • Entering coordinates

    • Enter X and Y Offset values in the prompt to position the notch relative to the selected reference corner. The values represent the distance from the reference point in the X and Y directions.

Select Enter to confirm the entries or the selection. To display additional prompt options, select the Down Arrow key.

Designation

Defines the type of the notch.

X

X Position

Defines the notch position using X Offset values (mm).

Y

Y Position

Defines the notch position using Y Offset values (mm).

F

Finish

Creates the notch.

Designation (D)

The default notch designation is applied when a notch is created.

To define a different notch shape:

  • Select Designation.

  • Enter a valid designation, for example R50.

  • Press Enter.

    The notch preview updates to reflect the selected designation.

    Note: Different designations define different notch geometries. Some designations are applicable to corner notches only, while others are available for contour notches.

    X Position (X)

    Defines the notch location using the X Offset value.

    Enter an X coordinate to place the notch at a specific distance from the reference corner in the horizontal direction. This option is typically used when the exact notch location is known.

    Y Position (Y)

    Defines the notch location using the Y Offset value.

    Enter a Y coordinate to place the notch at a specific distance from the reference corner in the vertical direction. For example, entering 500 mm creates the notch 500 mm from the selected reference point in the Y direction.

    Finish (F)

    Creates the notch using the specified designation and position values.

    When you select Finish, the notch is created on the plate contour at the defined location.
