Material return disposition scenarios

When you enter the material return quantity, ensure you specify the intended action for the returned material. Based on your requirement, select any of the following return disposition scenarios to return materials to the storehouse:

  • Cancel Requirement: The returned material is no longer required for the associated project. If the material is returned against a Material Take-Off (MTO) or a Part List (PL) item, then the requirement for the item is not raised again.

  • Postpone: The returned material is placed back in the inventory but is still required for ongoing activities. The material is added back to the Delivery Request List (DRL) through which the material was picked and you can pick the material later.

  • Release to other DRL: The returned material is placed back in the inventory but is still required for a different activity. Consequently, the original DRL through which the material was picked remains closed. Instead, the returned quantity reinstates the requirement for the MTO or PL item against which the material was initially issued. Thus, the returned quantity becomes available for processes in the s23003 Material Allocation Run screen and the s21012 Pallet Lists screen, aiding in the determination of applicable MTO or PL items to transfer to DRLs. Using the Release option, you can only return materials issued against an MTO or a PL item, including substitute materials.

In the special case where the returned material serves as a substitute for an item in an MTO or a PL, the quantity of the DRL item containing the original substituted material is reduced by the returned amount of material. According to the substitution rule defined in the s23003 Material Allocation Run screen, you can exchange a certain quantity of the original material with a different quantity of the substituting material. The conversion is taken into account when you determine the extent of reduction for the DRL item quantity.
