Rules for generating a picking list

  • Last UpdatedMay 07, 2026

The system generates a picking list for Delivery Request List (DRL) items based on quantity requirements, material detail preferences, and reservations. The rules differ depending on whether material detail preferences are defined and whether reservations exist.

For a DRL without material detail preferences

The system selects locations based on available quantity relative to the DRL requirement as follows:

  1. Within the site where the picking list is generated, the system looks for a location holding with the lowest available quantity that can cover the full required quantity for inclusion in the picking list. If such a location exists, the picking list reserves the full quantity at that location.

  2. If no single location holding can cover the full requirement, the system reserves stock from all of the smallest available holdings within the storehouse.

  3. For the remaining DRL item quantity, the system looks for the smallest available holding that is large enough to cover the remaining quantity, and then reserves the full remaining quantity from that location.

  4. Rules 2 and 3 are repeated iteratively until the complete DRL item quantity is reserved on picking lists, or until no more material is available for reservation.

For materials with shelf-life information, the system reserves stock with the earliest expiry date first instead of the smallest holding.

For a DRL with material detail preferences

The system considers only locations that fulfill the specified material detail preferences, such as certificates or material instances. The shelf-life is not considered, and quantities are reserved according to the preferences.

For a DRL with reservations

When a DRL has reservations, the system selects locations based on material detail preferences and available stock:

  • DRLs without material preferences: The system reserves stock from locations that are not already reserved for DRLs with material preferences.

  • DRLs with material preferences: The system reserves stock from locations that meet the specified material preferences. The shelf-life is ignored for such reservations.

  • Mixed scenarios: If multiple DRLs exist on the same site and reservations are broken due to warehouse changes, the system reserves stock on a first-come, first-served basis. A DRL with material preferences receives the quantities available for the preferences first. A DRL without material preferences receives any remaining stock not reserved for DRLs with preferences.
