Create a report

You can create reports using Microsoft Visual Studio with the Reporting Services Project extension installed. The procedures in this section will require you to create reports, build the solution, and deploy the solution. This section uses two examples to take you through the process of either using the project wizard or creating a report manually. We will create a report that is connected to RealTime using the report server project wizard, and then we will manually create a report that is connected to Historical within Microsoft Visual Studio. The process of creating a report also includes the creation of data sources and datasets. For our examples, we will look up data that is part of either the RealTime database (RTDB) or the Historical database. This means we will need access to at least two different data sources. The queries on each of the databases are defined as a dataset and are used in the graphical representation of the report through tables or charts.

To create a report using Reporting Services

  1. Create a project (refer to Create a project using the Report Server Project Wizard).

  2. Create reports manually or via the Report Server Project Wizard:

    1. Using the Report Server Project Wizard (refer to Create a project using the Report Server Project Wizard)

      1. Build the project

      2. Deploy the project

    2. Manually:

      1. Insert elements

      2. Define the data source

      3. Define the datasets

      4. Bind the dataset

      5. Build the project

      6. Preview the report

      7. Add parameters to the report

    3. Modify the report

    4. Add custom code parameters to a report

    5. Create a connection

    Before You Begin

    • Install Microsoft Visual Studio with the Microsoft Reporting Services Projects extension.

Note: The Community Edition is recommended, as it is free and will allow report development.
