Follow this procedure to configure a Flatline Watchdog (watchdog) record for monitored points. This can be used to determine if the telemetered value trend of any configured monitored point has matched the specified trigger condition.
To create a Flatline Watchdog
-
Open the Advanced Database Editor (ADE), and locate the watchdog table.
-
Double-click the watchdog table.
The watchdog Table Edit dialog appears.

-
From the Table menu, select Insert Row.
A new row appears in the watchdog Table Edit dialog.

-
Double-click
in the row header of the new row.
The watchdog Row Details dialog appears.

-
In the Name field, enter a unique watchdog name.
-
Optional: In the Description field, enter a brief description of the watchdog point.
-
Optional: Select the Watchdog Enabled checkbox to enable the watchdog behavior.
Note: When the watchdog point is enabled, the application will start monitoring points configured for watchdog.
-
Optional: In the Dataset field, select (...), and select the distributed AVEVA Enterprise SCADA dataset for this point.
-
Optional: In the Group field, select (...), and select the group for this point.
-
In the Remote field, select (...), and select the remote for this point.
Note: It is recommended to configure a watchdog record and monitored points on the same remote in order to report relevant watchdog trigger conditions.
-
Optional: In the Base Message field, select (...), and then select the base message for the stale messages. For watchdog records, select watchdog as the default base message.
Note: The watchdog base message will be used by default if another message has not been specified.
-
Optional: Select the Integrity Update checkbox to request an integrity poll whenever the specified trigger condition clears.
Note: For more information, refer to Configure the minimum integrity update poll time.
-
Optional: In the RTN Hold Off Cycles field, enter the number of cycles to evaluate for a normal state.
Note: The number of cycles should be configured from 1 to a maximum of 5.
-
Optional: In the RTN Hold Off Interval field, enter the interval of time to validate the return to normal (RTN) hold off number of cycles.
Note: The interval of time must be set as HH:MM:SS 00:00:00
-
Select the Monitored Points tab.
Note: Watchdog can configure up to five monitored points.

-
Optional: In the Point Path field, select (...) to select the path of the point to be monitored.
Note: Only points from the analog and status tables are supported.
-
Optional: In the Timeout (sec) field, enter the interval time (in seconds) that the monitored point must change before it is considered to be triggered.
Note: The timeout value must be greater than the value assigned to the FLATLINE_WATCHDOG_PROCESSING_FREQUENCY key. This key is defined in the RealTime_FlatlineWatchdog.json file and is set to 5 seconds by default. If you change the value of this key, you must also update the value of the timeout if needed.
-
Optional: From the Watchdog Type dropdown menu, select the flatline type. The following options are available:
-
Ramp โ The Flatline Watchdog will be triggered if:
-
The monitored point has a value outside the configured range.
-
While within the configured range, the value does not meet the increment and timeout configured.
An increment of zero means the application performs only range checking.
-
-
Range โ The Flatline Watchdog will be triggered if:
-
The monitored point has a value outside the configured range.
-
While within the configured range, the value does not change before the configured timeout. A timeout of zero means the application performs only range checking.
Note: Range is only recommended for status monitored points, but can be used to configure analog monitored points if needed.
-
-
Disabled โ This option is the default for monitored points that are not configured. Use this option to stop watching the point for a specified condition.
-
-
Optional: In the Min Range field, enter the minimum range value.
Note: This field is only available when Ramp and Range is selected in the Watchdog Type dropdown menu.
-
Optional: In the Max Range field, enter the maximum range value.
Note: This field is only available when Ramp and Range is selected in the Watchdog Type dropdown menu.
-
Optional: In the Increment field, enter the minimum value that the monitored point needs to be incremented for each cycle. The incremented value can be more (but never less) than the specified amount.
Note: This field is only available when Ramp is selected in the Watchdog Type dropdown menu.
-
Optional: If you want the point to instantly return to normal from a triggered state, select Ignore RTN Hold Off.
-
Optional: Repeat steps 16 to 22 for each remaining row.
