A digital state set has a name and consists of a list of states. Those states are discrete values represented by strings. Each digital state set is a user-defined list of strings, enumerated from 0 to n to represent different values of discrete data. For example, the digital state set "status" contains four states: ERR, OPEN, CLOSE, and TRANSIT.

Digital states are important for PI digital tags, as the integer value representing the state of the point on the AVEVA Enterprise SCADA system is translated to the appropriate string value on the PI server.
