Validate input values using regular expressions (RegEx)

A regular expression (RegEx) is used to validate entered values against certain criteria. A RegEx does not perform any validation on the entered value: it just ensures the entered value meets the standards set forth for the column. If a RegEx encounters an unsupported character, it immediately provides feedback. For further information on regular expressions, please refer to .NET Regular Expressions.

Example

A certain field in a RealTime database (RTDB) table record within the Advanced Database Editor (ADE) can only accept numbers. If an Administrator enters a letter in the field, the system should immediately notify the Administrator that the entered value is not a number and hence does not meet the criteria for the field. To this end, a triangular icon with an exclamation mark appears next to the value. Hovering the mouse pointer over the triangle displays the text (tooltip) contained in the RegEx's Description attribute.

The system will not allow the Administrator to save the record until the issue is resolved.

There are two options when employing RegEx:

  • Use inline RegEx in the Field element

  • Use Plugins
