Configure Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Monitor to publish device information to the NMC
The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Monitor can be configured to retrieve information about any device and publish this information to the Network Management Console (NMC). You can achieve this using ConfigWMIMonitor. This process can be an effective way to view the device state within the NMC.
Notes: This out-of-the-box mechanism does not create adminPager messages, nor does it cause
failovers to take place if the hardware fails — it only enables the device to be visible
within the NMC. When this device is displayed within the NMC, it is shown with static
icons rather than state-specific icons.
Configuration changes to the WMI Monitor must be followed by a Common service restart
for it to take effect in the NMC.
To enable additional logic to be performed, and/or to enable the NMC to show icons that identify the state of the device, you must create a component that the WMI Monitor will call during the processing of the retrieved device information. This component can be specified while you configure the device monitoring characteristics.
For more information, refer to Creating Project Specific WMI Monitor Components for Any Device.
To configure WMI Monitor to publish device information to the NMC
-
On the desktop, double-click the Windows PowerShell for DNA shortcut.
Windows PowerShell for DNA opens.
-
To execute the Config WMI Monitor, execute the following commands:

-
For a new WMI Namespace to be configured, select the desired namespace in the left-hand panel.
The Available classes pane is populated.

-
Select the class that you want to monitor, and then select Next.
The Configure Class page appears.

-
Configure the following fields:
-
In the Class / Device Name To Appear in NMC field, enter the desired class or device name.
-
From the Poll Interval (seconds) dropdown menu, select the interval that this device will be checked.
-
Select Select Field, to select the device identifier field that uniquely identifies this device.
