Understanding Jitter Smoothing

Both Administrators and Controllers can configure the number of analog and rate readings – "n" – used in calculating the arithmetic mean.

If the number of available readings is less than "n", the application continues to calculate the average using the available readings until "n" readings are available. The available readings come from analog and rate records' curval and currate fields, respectively.

The application does not modify the actual values received by the host. Instead, it stores the average values for analog and rate points in a separate curavg field.

"n" (Number of Averaged Samples)

Description

Average Value

0

(Default) Disables the calculation of the average value.

Current polled value read.

1

Disables the calculation of the average value.

Current polled value read.

2

Calculate average using the current polled value and the last polled value.

Average of two polled values.

3

Calculate average using the current polled value and the last two polled values.

Average of three polled values.

4

Calculate average using the current polled value and the last three polled values.

Average of four polled values.

16

(Maximum number of samples) Calculate the average using the current polled value and the last 15 polled values.

Average of 16 polled values.

In the following example, the feature is enabled on an analog point by setting "n" to 5:
