Alternate Alarm Limits

This application allows Administrators to optionally configure analog, rate, and flowTotalConfig points with multiple alternate sets of alarm criteria.

Administrators can either set a point to use a single set of limits, or configure the point to use different sets of limits based on the state of a configured multistate point.

The procedure for configuring the application is as follows:

  1. Create an almlimitset record (refer to Create an alarm limit set).

  2. Create an almlimit record (refer to Configure alternative alarm limits).

  3. Associate the almlimitset record created in Step 1 with the almlimit record created in Step 2.

  4. Set the Active Alarm Limit field on the Main tab of the almlimitset Row Edit dialog box to the name of the almlimit record from Step 2 (refer to Almlimit Row Edit: Main tab).

Note: Rate Reasonability alarms are not part of Alternate Alarm Limits configuration.

Effect of Timed Alarm Inhibit on Alternate Alarm Limits

As mentioned below, when you configure or modify alarm limits and inhibit settings on the various tabs of the almlimit Row Edit dialog box, the system transfers the settings to the corresponding limits and inhibit settings of all analog and rate records associated with the almlimit record. Similarly, when you configure or modify the alarm limits and inhibit settings of an analog or a rate record associated with an almlimit record, the system transfers the settings to the almlimit record, as well as to any analog or rate records associated with that almlimit record.

However, when alarms on an analog or a rate point are inhibited for a configured amount of time via the Timed Alarm Inhibit application, and the corresponding analog or rate record has an associated almlimitset record, the system:

  • Ignores any saved changes to the alarm limits or inhibit settings within the almlimit record during the time of alarm inhibition.

When the Secondtimer expires, the point takes the settings from the almlimitset record to ensure it stays in sync with any changes that may have occurred during the time of alarm inhibition.

The system overwrites any changes to alarm limits or inhibit settings on the point that was subject to Timed Alarm Inhibit with the current state of the almlimitset record with which it is associated.

  • Does not transfer changes made to that analog or rate record to the almlimit record, or to any other analog or rate record associated with that almlimit record.

When the Secondtimer expires, the almlimitset record settings overwrite the settings on the point to ensure the point stays in sync with the almlimitset record.

For further information, refer to Timed Alarm Inhibit.
