Create message sets for input and output commands

Follow this procedure to create separate message sets for input and output commands and ensure the sets' messages work together in a one-to-one relationship.

To create message sets for input and output commands

  1. Create or locate a message set to use for commands (output) sent to connected field devices.

For example, if you want to create a message set containing the state messages "RUNNING" and "STOPPED" for use when a Controller starts and stops a device, respectively, you might use an output message set containing the messages "START" and "STOP".

For further information, refer to the following sections:

  2. Create a message set that will act as the state (input) message set to the corresponding command (output) message set.

As mentioned above, the messages in the input message set should exist in a one-to-one relationship with the messages in the output message set.

Note: In the example above, "START" is the second row in the message set for output messages, which corresponds to "RUNNING" — the second row in the message set for input messages. Hence, when a Controller starts a pump with these message sets associated with a status point, the system displays the state of the device as "RUNNING".
