Configure the system to output information on the alarm with the highest state

Note: For information on overriding default configuration settings, refer to Modify configuration settings.

By default, only HiLo category alarm states are applied to both the severity and flag.msgtxt field of analog, rate, and flowTotalConfig records. When an analog, a rate, or a flowTotalConfig point enters an alarm state, the State field (flag.msgtxt) on the associated Control dialog box displays one of the following six HiLo alarm states:

  • HIGH

  • LOW

  • HIGH-HIGH

  • LOW-LOW

  • INSTR HIGH (Instrument Fail High)

  • INSTR LOW (Instrument Fail Low)

The Highest Alarm State enhancement allows you to change the above behavior to include all other alarm states of different categories. With this enhancement, the displayed state is determined by the alarm state that is assigned with the highest severity in the message set. If there are two alarms with the same severity, the system uses the alarm state with the highest alarm state in the message set.

The newly supported alarm states are as follows:

  • USER HIGH

  • USER LOW when the point falls below either the Lo or user-defined Lo alarm limit

  • FLATLINE

  • CREEP

  • SETPOINT CREEP

  • ROC (Rate of Change)

As an example of the enhancement in action, assume the following:

  • The _analog1 record has two alarms: High and User High.

  • In the message set associated with the _analog1 record, High and User High alarms have the same severity (high).

  • The User High alarm state in the message set is 13.

  • The High alarm state in the message set is 1.

The State field on the Control dialog box for the _analog1 record will display USER HIGH (13 > 1).

To configure the system to output information on the alarm with the highest state

  1. In the %DNADataRoot%\RealTime\config\Settings directory, either create or open the RealTime_HighestState.json file.

  2. Change the "RealTime" > "OVERRIDE_CMSG_WITH_HIGHEST_STATE" value from false to true.

  3. Save the file.

  4. Restart the RealTime service.
