In AVEVA Enterprise SCADA, the name field for RealTime database (RTDB) tables is implemented as the pntname type, which limits the name field for RTDB table records to a single-byte character string of 32 characters. The description field for RTDB tables, meanwhile, is implemented as the pntdescription type, which limits the description field for RTDB table records to a single-byte character string of 48 characters.
The above structure allows AVEVA Enterprise SCADA to store names and descriptions for single-byte character set languages, which include the European-based languages. Single-byte character set languages supported in AVEVA Enterprise SCADA include the following:
-
Western European languages based on Latin characters
-
Central European languages
-
Cyrillic languages from Eastern Europe
-
Arabic languages
Additionally,AVEVA Enterprise SCADA also supports some Asian languages using single-byte characters, such as Indonesian, Malay, Vietnamese, and Thai.
Windows supports single-byte character set languages by means of code pages that store character encodings. The following table lists the languages supported in the single-byte character sets.

The name and description fields in AVEVA Enterprise SCADA Runtime, Advanced Database Editor (ADE), and AVEVA Enterprise SCADA HMI all support the languages listed in the table above. Since the character encodings are different for each of the code page groupings, the name and description fields are only supported between computers using the same code page for their Windows display language.
AVEVA Enterprise SCADA name and description field do not support multi-byte character set languages such as Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. These symbolic languages contain thousands of symbols in the languages that cannot be stored within a single-character byte. Unicode character encodings support such symbolic languages.
